RuneSword 2 goes Open Source |
|
Thanks to Adam West from <a href="http://www.crosscut.com/" target="_blank">CrossCut Games</a> for dropping us a line to say that their CRPG 'RuneSword 2' is now completely free and has been released to the community at <a href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/runesword/" target="_blank">SourceForge</a>. 'RuneSword 2' is a "hardcore" turn-based indie CRPG with over 40 skills and a unique twist on magic; it comes with two full adventures and a construction set or you can delve into the source. CrossCut has also launched new RuneSword <a href="http://www.crosscutgames.com/forums" target="_blank">forums</a> to support the community. |

I never heard of this game before and played it for a litte last night. It is a really good game if you can tolerate non-fancy smancy graphics.
Either I suck as building parties in the game or combat is very difficult. I haven't finished a quest yet so maybe thats where all the xp comes from, because as it is now I won't see lvl 2 until 2038.
If you like the spiderweb games this is right up the alley. _________________ Vegitarian is the Indian word for lousey hunter. |

Hmmm, I'll try. I think I'll check this out... might have a dabble with the editing options.

The Adam West? Probably not. Although he does go to work by day and by night he's a fearless indie developer, so who knows?
I played RS2 a while back but it was fun. The graphics are very 'old school' but one of the things listed for work at Sourceforge is updated directx graphics.
Actually I'm looking forward to their Dungeon Delvers, based on the board-game Talisman. I know it's not a CRPG but it's sort of related and I used to have heaps of fun playing that with friends. Also RS3 will be a sci-fi setting with new graphics, so that will be worthwhile. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

Talisman.... what a cool game. I'd forgotten all about it, I used to enjoy that too. Monopoly for RPGers. Ridiculously off-topic: was there ever a decent computer version of Blood Bowl? |

Really, everything you list here is very do-able. The exceptions are DirectX (see my seperate thread) and split up the Pary. The latter *could* be done I suppose, but would again be a fundamental change to the engine. Still, it's less of a change than DirectX would be. You'll have to look at the code for yourself to be sure.
Speaking of the code, RS2 is about 45,000 lines --- not including all the triggers in the modules. Not trying to scare anybody, but that amount of code won't be easy for many to digest. It's kinda object-oriented, but only within the limitations of VB.

Bugger! The old 'read the 5th post instead of just the 2nd one' trick! Oh well, I never said they'd actually get it done...just that it was on the list...
And shouldn't you be working on some mod, anyway? _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |
