This is the error message when i can try to load the demo:

"Gothic 1.08j has causes an acces violation at address 007853ADh by attempting to read from address FFFFFFFFh."

My configuration: Athlon 850 Asus A7V 384mb RAMpc133 ATI 8500 retail (driver 9016) Sblive! Win ME DX 8.1

The full version also had problems with newer ATI cards. Maybe one of the solutions works for the demo, which is based on the same build.
1.: if you have a tv or a second monitor near your pc you can consume another output signal. It should work when you have access to the dualhead features.

2.: you could try patch 1.08k. Itīs only for the full version, but at least itīs worth a try.

The 1.08k patch addresses exactly this issue:
"This patch fixes occasional crashes during gamestart. Especially if you play under Windows 98 and use some weird graphiccard/driver combination there is a possibilty that the game crashes with an illegal call to a directx utility function named "D3DXGetDeviceCount". This misbehaviour is now corrected as we do now link the gothic.exe with the directx 8 libraries, which do better support the newer driver and graphiccards. We suggest to use this exe only if you encounter crashes during gamestart (in detail: if you encounter crashes with the radeon 8500 or the Geforce 3 under Win98) This version is not supported by Piranha-Bytes."

But I doubt it works on the demo

So this means the Gothic demo does not and will not work with a Radeon 8500?
