Horizons: Community Lauded in Review @ GamerGod |
|
I normally don't link to external reviews (there are just too darn many of them), but this recent review of the long-established Horizons: Empire of Istaria makes some interesting observations about how the relatively small size of a game's player population can create a welcoming, helpful, small-town community.

Horizons: Empire of Istaria is a massively multi-player online role-playing game that has seen many changes over the years. Originally developed by Artifact Entertainment and published by Atari, the game was purchased by Tulga Games in January of 2005. The change in ownership has had a positive effect on the game granting it a new sense of stability and longevity. Through changes of ownership, server merges and ongoing upgrades of game mechanics; one thing has remained unchanged, dedicated players that make one of the best communities found online. In reviewing the game I found that it is not without its imperfections, but each problem I encountered was outweighed by the helpful nature of players I met along the way.

Yes, and if you're only interested in chatting with your mom, your co-workers, and various random child molesters, AIM can be quite sufficient. However, folks looking to join a global online community of people with shared intersts might be better served by signing up for an MMO- or a gaming message board even.
You are right though- AIM is indeed free. |

Oops, that last post was mine; I wasn't logged on to RPGDot (who hosts our comments) at the time. _________________ For each toon kills the mob he 'groes, yet each toon does not die. |

The sarcasm in my post was not clear possibly.
The reviewer is praising Horizons because the community is so SMALL. Not exactly a Massively Multiplayer Game over there at Tulga.
To recommend a MMO in a review because the community is friendly because they are like castaways on a deserted island just dying for ANY new friends made me smile. |

No, no, I got your sarcasm. And you may have a point (after all, the author's praise for the community were almost the only positive things he had to say about the game). But I don't think it's entirely fair to characterize the game's population as 'castaways.' I mean no one's forcing them to be there- they're actually paying for the privilege! Some players are drawn to MMOs primarily for the social ties that can form, and from what I know about the game's design, Horizons is particularly suited to that kind of player. _________________ For each toon kills the mob he 'groes, yet each toon does not die. |
