Interplay's plan: a Fallout MMORPG

Interplay has <a href="http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/040625/def023_1.html" target="_blank">announced</a> their 2004 Q1 earnings, along with some insight into their planned future direction. Q1 resulted in a $0.9M loss and here's a snip from CEO Herve Caen on their plans:<blockquote><em>Commenting on the announcement, Mr. Caen said, "Based on a detailed review of where our industry stands and the level of interest in the gaming community in taking some of our premier properties online, we are now pursuing several options to fund our entry into Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming with titles including Fallout. Initial feedback from our investment bank and ongoing dialogue with others in the gaming sector appear to confirm that the combination of our valuable and popular intellectual properties with the rapidly growing online gaming community is the best way to maximize Interplay shareholder value."</em></blockquote>Right. Thanks to Serban Stokker from <a href="http://www.jucaushii.ro" target="_blank">Jucaushii.ro</a> for pointing the item out via <a href="http://www.bluesnews.com" target="_blank">Blue's</a>.

Interplay's days are truly numbered and the fallout franchise is gonna be dirt in the ground.

Interplay is just about out of business, this sounds like a way to try and get someone interested in buying off any value left to try and prevent a bankruptcy.

That's IPs death, I'm sure. *sigh* Like a badly-wounded animal
that still tries to move, to runaway but then slowly, painfully faces
its extinction.

R.I.P.

I think all of Interplay's money must've gone up Herve's nose because everytime he opens his mouth he sounds like a coked up moron. Overconfident and hyped up about one horrible idea after another. And of course he has to try to piss all over the world of Fallout while he's going down.

I wish someone would just buy the damn Fallout license and make Fallout 3. Almost anyone would be better than Herve & Interplay at this point. For the love of cheese sandwiches I hope nobody actually makes Fallout into an MMO. But since that's the only thing I can think of worse than a Fallout console only "action-rpg" (and some idiot thought THAT was a good idea) I'm sure they will. Whoever tries to fund a Fallout MMO deserves what they get (and it wouldn't be pretty).

*lol*
that's the most pathetic strategic plan I've ever heard. Someone tell Mr Caen MMORPGs are not the cash cow everybody thought they would be...

RIP IP

I really have to wonder, how silly these Interplay-managers are. To be honest i'm convinced to be able to do a far better job - they just do only wrong market-decisions: First they cancel 3 (three!!!) AAA-single-player-rpgs (Torn, BG3, F3), which were in the middle of their production (summed up the production costs including the ones for the crap Lionheart would have enabled them to release at least two really good and polished rpgs!).
And now they enter the mmorpg-market - the MOST-CROWDED gamesmarket ever existed, in which even giants like Microsoft have to cancel huge projects like Mythica because of the monstrous financial risks. Or think about Warhammer Online, another high-profile project. I have to repeat myself, how silly are these Interplay-managers ??? Do they really think, that they have a chance against WoW, Everquest 2, D&D Online, Middle Earth Online, Matrix Online, Tabula Rasa, Ultima Odyssey, Vanguard....
And also the Fallout games were always about great NPCs, story, atmosphere and decision-making, not really the prime qualities of the mmorpg.
I just dont understand that shit !!!

The problem is that buying the Fallout license would still give Interplay, aka, Herve Caen more money to continue his reign of terror. As much as it hurts, I believe the best thing is for potential buyers to deny giving IPLY and Caen any money, and let the man suffer everything the law can heap on him. He is without a doubt the worst CEO in the video game business and possibly worse than John Romero.

It's only when Caen is taken care of that we can hope for a proper Fallout 3 or a real spiritual successor.

Yeah, I'm sure investment bankers really know their ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to video games and what gamers want.

Well, with any luck they'll sink so much money into it that they'll not only have to cancel but close their doors to.

FOOL (Fallout Online) raises its ugly head again.

That sank like a lead balloon when they first tweaked the public's interest many moons ago.
