Gamebanshee cornered some guys from Turbine for a (very) short <a href="http://www.gamebanshee.com/interviews/dndonline.php" target="_blank">interview</a> on D&D Online. Here's one of the exchanges:<blockquote><em>GB: Equipping a character with a variety of magical items was always a fun aspect of tabletop Dungeons & Dragons. Do you plan on implementing many of the traditional D&D magic items in the MMORPG version, or will you be creating some of your own? <br> <br>Turbine: We’ll definitely want to use as many of the traditional Dungeons and Dragons magic items as possible. At the same time, expect some unique magic items created just for D&D Online as well. Of course, some magic items that you’ll find at the back of the DMG just don’t fit with the game. We’re sorry, but the Apparatus of Kwalish is probably out.</em></blockquote>

Im kinda queesy about this one. I mean, how many people really think Turbine can pull this off with an outdated engine? I wasnt very impressed with their engine for AC2. Sure, it was good at the time, but not anymore. Its been outdone by three multitudes by the EQ2 engine, 6x by the Dragon Empires engine, and a few others (Half-Life2 anyone ? ).

In the AC2 beta I had non-stop harddrive crunching no matter what I did to improve the performance.

I only like graphics as long as they don't drag down the game.

My problem is i dont trust Turbine's ability to deliver a really cool online experience. I dont think they have the brains. I might be wrong. I hope im wrong and they make a truly cool mmorpg based on D&D, but im not holding my breath. They're gonna have to prove themselves in spite of acquiring popular liscenses, to get my money.

I must agree. Turbine really messed up with AC2 despite that AC1 was a wonderfull game.
Eventhough the D&D licence sounds appealling I wonder if Turbine can pull it off....
Luckily there are plenty of other mmorpg's out there to choose from so I too won't hold my breath for this one.
But who knows, maybe they learned something from AC2 and make this a great game like AC1 was.

Im just concerned that Turbine is going to mess up again. They have acquired the two most important licenses ever:

1. Middle Earth Online, Tolkien
2. Dungeons and Dragons Online

Those are the two most promising franchises, but it is obvious to me that Turbine has already screwed up MEO through lame design practices, and will probably mess up on D&DO also, so im not holding with bated breath. They mess up everything. Losers. I miss the old MMO team -- they would have done the game justice. But Turbine? I dont think so...

Goodbye Meo and goodbye D&DO...
