"8. In the Morrowind.ini file I changed Font 1= century_gothic_font_regular to Font 1=century_gothic_big. This improved font quality big time. "
Can you replace it with a different font type? I wonder... Arial is the easiest for me to read.
Thanks for the tips. |

Quasimo: the fonts I am speaking about are already in a Morrowind sub-directory. As far as I know, you only have these 2 options.
Anonymous: the error you are getting is related to a missing file as mentioned above to Quasimo or an incorrect statement on the font line of the Morrowind.ini
Wandering Wanderer: thanks for taking the time from your wandering to give that info. I'm going to try it now. It is great having 2 PC side-by-side. I play Morrowind on one and this forum on the other.

I dpwnloaded the "patch" but I can't seem to get it to work - haven't been able to create a viable desktop shortcut. Please help with this because my game is almost unplayable, and although I've downloaded the file, I still can't get it to work any better. Which file do I click on to create the new shortcut? And does this exe file need to be extracted (I can't see how as it is not a zipped file)?
I don't think I can play this game otherwise -not to mention the fact that I am absolutely stymied by how to use magic - altogether not having a good gaming experience - and the game looks so good.
PLEEEEEEEZ HELP. |

Step 1: download the file from the link mentioned a beginning of this topic.
Step 2: rename the file at "c:\program files\bethesda softworks\morrowind.exe" to something like "morrowind_original.exe".
Step 3: copy the file you downloaded to this directory. It should already be unzipped. Please note that it about 1MB smaller in size than the original.
Step 4: start Morrowind, tweaking as I suggested at beginning of this topic.
Step 5: enjoy the wonder outlander!
-good question, best of luck!

| How to edit the "Morrowind.ini" file |

Does this fix make it bigger?
Steps to edit the file:
1. Open MS Notepad.
2. menu: File / Open
3. browse to "c:\program files\bethesda softworks\morrowind\"
(this assumes you used the default install path)
4. the 12th item down should be "morrowind.ini"
5. open this file
6. menu: Search / Find
7. enter "font". This will take you to the font section of the INI file.
8. scroll down to: "Font 1=century_gothic_font_regular"
9. put a ";" in front of the line to comment out the statement
10. add the following line to replace the old statement
"Font 1=century_gothic_big"
11. save this file as a "plain text" file. That is why I recommend MS Notepad
over MSWord or something else. It must not have any formatting in it.
I hope this helps... |

- I use let it try to free up a max of 300MB but it will only do what it can, which in my case is 288MB. Read the help files about freeing memory. I run Win98SE and I find that 384MB RAM does increase performance over 256MB RAM, but mostly when I run 4-5 apps at once (e.g. ACT!, MSWord, Outlook, MSExcel, and WinFaxPro) and it keeps freeing up wasted memory. I find it helps clear memory for games also and it has not interfered with Morrowind.

- You are correct the link is dead. This guy probably got cut because of bandwidth/fileshare excessive use. I have tried it with and without the "patch". I did not find a significant difference. Turning FSAA down from Quincunx to 2xAA produced a greater effect and no FSAA is best performance. Also do the other tweaks I mentioned. Try going through a familiar area with different combos and see which is acceptable.
Bethesda is looking at how to maintain SafeDisc compliance and improve performance. We should see a patch just before Xbox launch. This period is a shakedown to Xbox. Overall I have to say I have not encountered any of the problems mentioned by others. (See my system at beginning of this post)
DO NOT install or copy the files from the 2nd Construction CD into your Morrowind directory. These are the uncompressed version of the ".bsa" file that is there. Installing these files will slowdown Morrowind in various ways.
I just put the 2nd CD in my drive when I run the construction set, and I have had no problems.
I hope this helps.

Hey Jack I was wondering what video drivers you use because I also have a GeForce 3. Oh, and do you know if there is any performance improvement with Morrowind running in 98 rather than XP? Anyone with the facts can answer this. |
