Can't Equip Anything .

I just started Gothic and I expected it to start slowly but this is rediculous (spelling) I have a pick and 2 swords i picked up but when I try to fight I can't figure out any way to equip 1 of them . I also don't seem to have any skills of any kind . (huh?)

Open your inventory, choose the category (weapons) with the right-> or left<- keys as appropriate. Select the weapon in question with the up- or down keys. Highlight the weapon you wish to use by pressing the action- and up- keys (action key: ctrl or left mouse). You'll see a light blue rim around the weapon in your inventory now, meaning that it is equipped. There will also be a number standing in the field now - 1 for a close combat weapon, 2 for distance weapons.
If you want to fight, draw your sword/close combat weapon by pressing the 1 key or you bow (if you have one equipped) by pressing the 2 key.

You will get skills after leveling - by trading Skill points (you get 10 when leveling up one notch) for skills (you can also raise your attributes this way). You have to find a teacher first though.

You don't need a combat skill to fight, but it will make things a lot easier.
