| What exactly am I supposed to do in the old world? |

I'm currently in Chapter 2 - What am I supposed to do in the old world?
I am only level 6 so am too weak to fight any orcs.
Where am I supposed to go and what am I supposed to do? |

First of all, you need to go to the castle and ask Garond to send you the evidence of the dragons.
I've posted some screenshots in this thread which describes in detail how to enter the castle. If you follow my path, you'll encounter one or two orcs right before you enter the castle. However, with the help of Potion of Speed or Transform spell, escaping from them should be a breeze for you.
(There's no point for me to show you the map, because you don't have a map until you're in the castle.) |

When u say castle do you mean the old city? Or is there some other castle? |

Go explore some more. You will need to fight if you want to solve the upcoming quest that is attached to asking Garond for proof. |

My question now is how do i exit the old city and complete the quest for Garond? There are orcs everywhere!

when you entered the valley of mines there was a path leading down, and one leading up, if you go up and go over the bridge, you'll find a teleportrune somewhere. 
if you are at some place and want to go back to the entrance of the V.O.M., use the rune and you're back on the spot you have found it (very helpfull) 
so if you are in the castel after you have got the rune, you don't have to walk back, just beam yourself back 
hope this helps 
ps if you haven't got the rune when you enter the castel, then yes you have to go back the way you came.
