Hi -
Just got Gothic and I love it - but I am a bit stuck - I've done 70% of the quests in the Old Camp and now have moved to the Old Mine w/ the two large towers and the gate w/ the winch and crushing machine(?) outside of it.
When I run the winch nothing happens - so...what am I doing wrong in order to get into the old mines??

Forget the winch, just enter the cave!

Yes. I think you have to be admitted to a camp before you can start the old mine. That's chapter two. |

Sorry to break this news to you, but the winches in this game have a notorious habbit of being buggy. You were not supposed to have touched the winch, the mine was already open when you get your Test of Faith quest.
There are 2 solutions.
1. Reload from a save before you turned the winch.
2. Enter Marvin-Mode (cheat mode), type 's' for the character screen, then type 'marvin' (you won't see the text), then type 's' again. You'll see marvin mode and a console on the top of the screen. Hit 'F2' to close the console. Then get close to the gate at the mine. Press 'k' and your character will teleport forward a few feet. Thus bypassing the gate.
Word of advice: Don't touch ANY winch until you get the quest to be in that area.

Ok...well the only cave I see is the one blocked by a huge gate, so I can't enter.
And the reason I have to get into the old mine is to perform the test of faith to become a member of the Old Camp...
So I am still stumped...did I forget to hit a trigger in the game> |

All winches are bad, very VERY bad! Sometimes even the one's you are supposed to touch are bad!
