Hi all (kinda long, warning) |
|
hi
new here but been a lurker on rpgdots boards for a long time.
moving from bethsdas forums, you seems less hostile here.been playing diablo2 for too long, dungeon siege was not bad but not really great either. system shock2 i finaly played past the storage part and the game was a real surprise, recomended. actually a great game. then i noticed gothic2, found the demo for gothic and i liked what i saw. hehe my german is bad "ein bier bitte" and a few more.
iguess thats why i missed it.
so now i am waiting for gothic to arrive, hopefully tomorrow.
gothic2 is home already, but wanted to play the first one first.
eh, is there something i should know about before starting? bad bugs.
but even some tips, esp melee hehe. will try to make a fighter in gothic, (morrowind is better for archery, but melee is e well not so interesting.)
1handed 2 handed both?
how about magic? can i have both should i raise str and weapons and then put rest in mana and spells?
what about lockpicking acrobatics sneaking etc?
do they make a difference?
making money of animal seems good so some points there cant hurt.
found the faq. big one. but havent read the walktrough part.
no spoilers please (only if crucial)
patches?
how do the chapters work? is the world different new monsters etc?
p1.7
512 ddr
80.0 gb
audigy
had some dropping to desktop when fighting 2-3 opponents in the demo, but thats all.
why did they sneak out these 2 games on the marked?nobody knows about them and getting an copy of the first one is very frustraiting.
everybody talks of morrowind, whats wrong with this game? |

First off, welcome . I'll try to answer a few of your questions:
There are some bugs in G1, but if you bought the English language version you'll get a version which has already been patched.
There's one important rule, however: never touch a winch unless you have to - in the English language version (yes, the patched one) touching a winch unless you're supposed to do so might wreak havoc later in the game (the gate/s in question might not open ever again).
If you're planning on playing a pure fighter, you'll be able to max out both 1handed and 2handed. If you want some magic as well, be sure not to average your character too much - in the end of the game you'll need either at least 30 points of strength or lots of magic. But it is absolutely possible to play as a fighter/mage character the way you suggested.
Lockpicking can come in handy, but it's not a must. The biggest advantage of acrobatics is to help you travel faster; sneaking, however, is absolutely worthless in game terms.
Skinning animals is a useful skill to have in the earlier stages of the game, since you'll be in dire need of ore (the local currency). Then again, there's not much you can buy for ore, anyway, unless it's armor... and you'll get some free armor and weapons if you search diligently enough.
Another rule: talk to all named characters.
How do the chapters work? The story will dictate chapter changes; most wandering monsters will respawn at a chapter change.
The desktop crashes might be sound-related. Search the Troubleshooting forum for a solution to this, there have been many threads mentioning the problem. Unfortunately I forgot the solution.

tip: also before using a winch, SAVE! if the gate won't open, then you can reload and try again. it's useful to have about 30 mana by chapter 3, even as a fighter, you will also require a bow at one point later in the game. I think everything else has been mentioned now, enjoy! _________________ =High Shadow of the RPGDot Shadows=

If you are talking about the thing I think that you're talking about, you can also use a crossbow... _________________

The controls in gothic is just to get used to!!!
Once you're used to them it's alright (i think that the controls are hard to learn but once you've got the touch they are the best)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

SPOILER ALERT! this is if you want more ore.
if you have a couple of lockpicks with you, if not buy some, if you got no ore to buy some, use whistler's ore-see whistler's quest. now if you a lockpick find a hut, sleep until midnight and find the smithy. the smith's box contains some blades that you can make into crude swords-sells for 50 ore each-and using one of the game's bugs while working on the anvil press the forward button as fast as you can. you could either end up with 20 or more crude swords this way which will hand you around a 1000 ore.
forget fighting for a while and just do your current quests. baal pervez and mordrag are really a big help early in the game if you know the right people to talk to inorder to gain their uhm "escort services".
if you want a free armor, make your way to the new mine. whilst in the new camp follow the path going up the mountain atop the practice grounds of the mercenary. the path is "guarded" by three scavengers and further along the path you'll meet a couple of molerats and a wolf. in the new mine talk to the named npcs there and get yourself a free armor.
just a note, if you've taken whistler's quest, don't take too long to give him his sword. _________________ "were you a hero in the war, granpa?"
