Thief: Deadly Shadows - Preview @ IGN |
|
Not to be outdone by Gamespot, PC.IGN also has a hands-on preview of 'Thief: Deadly Shadows'. Here's the intro:
Before Splinter Cell was a twinkle in Tom Clancy's eye, the stealth action genre was humming with activity, thanks in large part to its creator, Warren Spector, who bowled us over with Thief: The Dark Project back in 1998. Thief was a much different kind of action game--it was much darker, much slower-paced, and drenched with tension as Garrett slinked through shadows and wove around heavily-armed guards who could hear him rustling around. Well, it's now been four years since the release of the last title in the series, but Thief: Deadly Shadows is promising to give Sam Fisher and Rikimaru a run for their money.
|

yep that is exactely how it happened - warren made thief all on his own! he had the idea, made all the artwork himself, created the story and then programmed the whole thing himself...! what a great guy! the othere idioty from looking glass did nothing - they just ran around and were drinking coke all the time and tried to keep poor warren from working on thief. |

I hate that too. Warren spector is the Malcolm Mclaren of gaming. For the record - the credit for Thief's design should go to Doug Church amongst other brilliant Looking Glass people.

Who in the world is Rikimaru? Btw, from what I read, I think Thief 3 stole the 3rd person viewpoint idea from Splinter Cell AND NOT the other way around. For some reason, I'm beginning to hate Warren. _________________ The world is small, nasty and complicated, and everybody dies alone... - Sam Fisher |

And on the seventh day, Warren rested.
To be fair, Warren spent years trying to tell people to pay attention to Doug Church and the others, but they just haven't decided to play the role of GIANT TALKING MOUTHs. |

Rikimaru was the player's character in Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, which used 3rd person view years before Splinter Cell. It was another of the first stealth games, and was on PS1. |

Consoles created stealth-action. Thief improved it greatly though!
1987 - Metal Gear for the 8-bit nintendo had you sneaking past lights and gaurds.
1997 - Tenchu for playstation1. Thief is basically a carbon copy of this game. Both games even have a shop for "thief gadgets"/ninja gadgets between levels. Thief is in fact better though.
1998 - Thief for PC
1998 - Metal Gear solid for Playstation
2000- Deus Ex(Deus Ex has many ideas from Metal Gear Solid)
2000 - Thief2
2002 - Splinter Cell - a mixture of Tenchu,Thief, and Metal Gear
2003 - Deus Ex - Invisible War
2004 - Splinter Cell - Pandora Tommorow(innovative multiplayer)
Splinter Cell stole 3rd person from Tenchu.
You should play software cause you like it. Not based on the hardware. Thief:Deadly Shadows will be better than the originals. They could definitely be improved! But until them I am gonna keep playing the originals. _________________ Between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities…there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars…Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand…to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet. - Robert E. Actually, the original metal gears were for computers - the apple 2e, msx, etc. The nes one was a port. |

Also, theif was not a carbon copy of tenchu. The issue of third vs first person and both the focus on stealth vs action are clear demarcations in the different design focuses of tenchu and thief. Theif 3 will be a disappointment because it will de-evolve into the action poopiness inherent in tenchu. |
