Better weapons early in the game |
|
For n00bs or those looking for replay with a twist:
You can get longbows and maces much earlier in the game than normal. I stumbled upon this the very firat time I played the game and didn't know any better.
As you first get started at the exchange place (where you first meet Diego) make you way down the canyon to where you get the rusty sword and kill two juv. scavengers. The go back up the canyon to the collapsed mine and climb up to the little bridge over the canyon. This leads to a small camp site "guarded" by a molerat. Pick up what you find there, but remember this place.
Go back to the Old Camp and run a few errands for people and kill a few creatures -- enough to get to Level 2 (20 points to spend). Spend 10 points on Dex (to put you at 20 -- minimum to use a Longbow) and spend 4 points (and the cash) to learn the hunting skills from Drax.
Now go back up the original canyon and cross the bridge. You will find that you can climb up a spot just around the corner and begin climbing up the cliff about the little camp site. Keep going and you will make it over the ridge a be looking down on Quentin's camp.
From the ridge top (save!) you can slide down the majority of the cliff and then run around the ledge (go to the right) and get down outside the main camp area (without anyone seeing you).
From there run towards the lookout tower and through the gate. There is one thug on the ground and one in the tower. Run past the on e on the ground closely enough for him to pull his mace and not his bow or you will be shot dead.
Keep running past, down the slope and around the corner. Once they give up the chase, stop and save (before getting to the goblins!). Then run towards the goblins until they get upset and run after you. Lead the goblins back towards the watchtower. Try not to get shot by the thugs (!) and hopefully the goblins will kill them off. If so, you will now get two longbows from the dead thugs.
Use the longbow and arrows to gradually pick off all the goblins (don't try taking on Quentin and the rest of the thugs at this point -- they are much better with bow and arrow than you are at this point.
From the goblins you will get Maces, which have the best damage for a ST 10 weapon in the game.
You can now take out the Troll with the scroll you find there, if you wish (lots of points!).
To get out of there without getting eaten by the snappers, go back to the watch tower and get on the ridge just over the gate and run down the ridge just above where the snappers are. This is tricky to do without using the falling cheat (holding strafe right or left while falling), but it can be done with patience.
You will now make it back to the Old Camp with lots of stuff (great weapons) and points for so very early in the game -- and without cheating at all. _________________ imposterAZ

Neat trick, but a bit complex. Plus, killing the troll early might screw up Diego's quest. _________________ OMG! WTF?! MONKEYS!!!!

Yes, that is a concern. You have used up the Shrink Scroll and you don't get a chance to buy a new one until later in the game from Xardas.
I have found three ways around that:
1. (No cheating at all) You can (very slowly) whittle the troll away using Fire Storm and Fireball spells (scrolls or runes). This take a very long time, but Diego can keep the troll busy forever, since he's immortal at this point in the game. Make sure you have lots of mana herbs and/or potions handy -- you'll need them to recharge.
2. (No or very little cheating) If you go to the Old Monastary first and get Gorn to follow you away from there (see the thread on Tips for Followers), he is actually strong enough (and swings a mean enough axe) to kill the troll for you outright!
3. (Cheating) Just insert a new Shrink Scroll (itarscrollshrink) and use that.
If anyone else has another way to deal with the troll, please let us know. _________________ imposterAZ

I was wondering. Since you can set people who are immortal to be mortal, can you make Diego mortal? _________________ OMG! WTF?! MONKEYS!!!!

You should be able to. I haven't seen an immortal I can't make mortal (and viceversa) yet. I just haven't tried it on Diego in particular. _________________ imposterAZ
