(Spoiler)
If you mean the gate in the Orc Town across the bridge, you won't be able to open it until late in the game after meeting Xardas.
Don't worry about it until you're TOLD to worry about it.

Shrapnel, you've got the wrong winch. This one will work we you need it to. It's kind of annoying, but true.

Personally, I think the designer could have come up with something just a bit more logical than calling a wench (sorry, spelling faux pas there - should be winch) jammed when it isn't jammed at all. Jammed implies broken - the winches in this game are NOT broken, the designer just didn't want us getting into the areas prior to a certain game point. I was VERY confused when I hit my first jammed winch (as apparently are a lot of people) - needlessly so I might add. All the designer needed to have done was say something like cannot be used yet or some such. Or does the German word for "jammed" mean - go away and come back when the game is further along ???

Made sense to me.
"The Time has not yet come for you to use this winch."

But why? This detracts from the realism of the game!

"The winch is jammed."

Oh! That's why I can't use it. Seems reasonable.
