Does any of you know where I can find a guide to create a great mage in BG1. I need something telling me which race, what skills do I need to maximize more than others. Can you also tell me if I am a general mage can I cast Necromancer spells??? _________________ "Whow, the necromancer is here" -Bartacus to myself |

Race should be human, that way you can gain unlimited levels, as far as the game lets you go, anyway.
There arent really any skills in BG1 that you maximize except for weapons, which i advize you should pick sling first followed by staff. Just pick a human mage in the beginning, not a specialist mage though.
A general mage can cast from all spell schools, so you would be able to cast from the necromancy school. A specialist mage, however, gets a few more spells to memorize, but cannot cast spells from the school opposite his specialization. So if you want to focus on necromancy, make your PC a Necromancer specialist, although you wont be able to cast certain spells. It tells you which school is opposite in the class description when you are choosing a class.
In BG1 and BG2 i chose to have a general mage. That way i was able to cast any spells from any spell school. At the end, in throne of Bhaal, i prolly had about 120 different spells i could use. It was darn cool.
I hope this helps. |

You can advance unlimited levels in the BG series with any race, not just human.
Humans make the best specialists, though... a human evoker is going to be flinging fireballs all day.
I prefer general mage. You lose a maximum of one castable spell per level per day, but you can use any magic you want. I prefer human, but that's just because I prefer human as a race. Elves, by the stats, are the best wizards (get some good special abilities and resistances for being elves, can see in the dark, etc) _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

Playing mage in D&D is both very interesting and quite complex. I think that paging through such D&D resources as Wizard's Handbook could be most useful. 2nd edition Wizard's Handbook can be found here:

Sure it gives you a list of general info for pen-and-paper game, but it's fun either way. Also pay close attention to first chapters about specializing in magic schools and detailed description of every school. |

thanks a lot I want to beat the entire saga once as a fighter and once as a mage and maybe another If I dare.
BTW, there is the king of all dragons in AD&D and the name started with "T" I know of him because my neighbor was from the time of Pen and Paper RPG's and he told me that if I beat that Dragon I didn't have to play AD&D anymore. Which is the name of the dragon??? _________________ "Whow, the necromancer is here" -Bartacus to myself |

Ok these are my skills:
Strenght - 10
Dexterity - 15
Constitution - 16
Intelligence - 16
Wisdom - 16
Charisma - 10
What do you think of my mage>???
Do I really don't need strenght????
Dexterity matters with a mage??:? _________________ "Whow, the necromancer is here" -Bartacus to myself |

Looks pretty good, but I will make a couple of suggestions.
This is just me, but I'd trade a couple of points in constitution to max out your intelligence. Dexterity is also very important - your mage wont be able to wear much armor - so I'd trade some wisdom to max that out too. Charisma isn't very useful for anyone except the person that does the talking, so you can take that down to the minimum if you don't mind your character being real ugly.
But hey, it's your decision. |

Tiamat (who is female, by the way) is the Chromatic Dragon (meaning, she combines all the colors of and rules the colored AD&D dragons) and evil while Bahamut is the Platinum Dragon (was it platinum?) and her good counterpart. At least they were in AD&D 1st ed . _________________ Jaz |

Ok thanks Jaz for the explanation:
BTW with a lot of patience I managed to get my mage with these skills:
Strenght 10
Dexterity 18
Constitution 16
Intelligence 18
Wisdom 17
Charisma 10
He is a Conjurer since is better to specialize a mage in a way that the opposite school is the one with the worst spells. My mage opossing school is Divination which have the more useless spells.
Another Question do I really Need Wisdom???
If I need to reduce one skill and max another please tell me. _________________ "Whow, the necromancer is here" -Bartacus to myself |

Yes, the conjurer is probably the best of all the specialist mages. Good choice.
Gee, you must have clicked the reroll button a lot of times to get those stats. The only choice you have left to make is basically between Wisdom and Constitution, which is largely a personal preference. If you want to dualclass to a cleric later, then definately go for Wisdom. A high Wisdom score increases the number of priest spells you get. Otherwise, it's just a choice between a little more magic resistance with a high Wisdom score or more hitpoints with a high Constitution score. It's up to you.
If it were me, I'd just leave them the way they are now. This guy is going to kick ass no matter what you choose. |
