First of all let me say Hi to everyone. I'm Italian but even from here I enjoy this great rpgdot site!

I tink that the "resurgance" is mostly a coincidende: this is because two great title like morrowind and nwn (titles that were announced way ago) hit the shops this year.

But I must admit that there is a resurgance and I tink it has 3 main reason: 1) Baldur's GAte 2)The new dungeons & dragons ediotion 3)The Ultima On Line phenomenon.

The problem of this title is that they are made for every kind of player, so they are Hack&slah in thei cores

Yes, I enjoy morrowind, nwn and bg2 but I find them to combat focused and not truly roleplayable...

Hi Erendil - you may have a point there. The resurgence in RPGs may, in fact, be due to the fact that they are diversifying. As Erendil mentioned we now have the MMORPGs as well as single player games but even in the single player games we now have cross-class genre's emerging. Examples are Deus Ex (FPS/RPG), Warcraft 3 (RTS/RPG), Diablo & Dungeon Seige (RPG lite). This makes the whole genre more accesable to a wider range of gamers and therefore becomes easier to market. Look at many of the very old RPGs like the original D&D games (Gold box series) - they only appealed to RPGers and hence had a limited market. Games with roleplaying elements (as well as roleplaying games) can now make seroius money and are, therefore, worth investing in by the publishers

I would say we've had lots more than just two titles since Christmas. Let's see here.

Old-school: Wiz8, MM9
"Blockbuster": BG2, BG2 expansion, Morrowind, NWN
"Sleepers": Gothic
RPG Lite: Diablo2, Dungeon Siege
Coming Soon: Arx Fatalis, Divine Divinity

I'd bet that RPGs haven't had that many well-received major releases in a 9 month period (give or take a month) EVER. Maybe when Ultima, Wizardry M&M and the Gold Box games were all in their heyday, but that's probably 15+ years ago. Granted, MM9 turned out to be a dog, but there was a good bit of buzz until its release because of the new engine and the history of the series. I think its safe to say this resurgence is real, and not just hype.
