I have played the game about 8 times. I wanted to play again, but needed a theme.
I intend to play as a Fire Magician and not learn sword or bow. Just concentrate on Mana and getting magic.
I want to be a true magician. I may have to run more than I want but it's a challenge I think I can overcome.
Has anyone ever attempted this before?

Yes, I have. It is very viable - and once you get the wind spell (forget the name) you won't have to run at all - just keep thrusting your opponents backwards! You will (as you know from finishing as another character) have to carry a bow for that one spot it is needed - but you don't need any skill in it. As well, you don't need any skill for the one creature that you must use a hammer for (just the hammer is good enough as the creature is easily defeated). I found the magic character to be even more enjoyable than the warrior or archer.

Do not the magician merchants carry weapons, if you sell them to them? Also you will have to use the sword if you want to knock someone down (eg: Scar) without their friends getting really mad at you. And think of Mud you don't want to just kill him once!
Aside from these things you likley should be fine.

Don't get backed into a corner with nothing but your sorcery to back you up. Even as a magician, there's no harm in training up to at least 70 strength and carrying a melee weapon as your "backup piece."

OK, just an update to let you know where I stand with this game.
I decided that I at least need to increase my strength and master 1h weapons. [I guess a mage does need a sword:) )
I am still in chapter 1, I want to see if I can get to level 10 before I choose a camp.
My strength is 30 and I am trained in 1h. As soon as I hit 40 strength I can use Silas's axe(very powerful 1h weapon(until I get the Orc hammer))I will not learn hunting or thief skills.
I decided to work as a Blacksmith when I am in the OldCamp and be a pusher in the New Camp.
The next message may be a few days, I want to do things right this time and try to reach level 40 or above. I don't wan't to zoom through it.
The most important part of being a mage is to keep Mud with you at all times. I notice my mana grows when he is near me.

Wellz... Since mana is desrived from praying and spiritual power, I guess you and Mud developed an "inner connection" ^_^

Heh the Mages not using weapons D&D mentality doesn't apply in Gothic, you're in a prison, Use what's available to get the job done. Throughout the game you can be a thief (heh you pretty much hafta), a warrior (again, swinging a weapon now and again is necessary) and finally a mage (if you so choose).

You're not a typical study for years bookworm type mage... You're a Terror mage... heheh you Learn your magic power Fast and Dangerously, by subjecting yourself to very bad situations and hoping you prepared for it... and sometimes... when that lil blue bar goes away... the Orc Hammer hasta come out and play.

Darnalak,
The Necromancer
(Even after all the potions enough to let me wield Scar's super cutter, I still use the orc hammer... I'm such a sentimentalist... at least... that's what I keep telling myself when I dream about Gomez' burnt body)

Well good luck with true mage. You find out very soon in the game its almost impossible to put exp into mana and cirlces only unless you have tons of cash for scrolls until you can learn the circles. Runes only become available with certain chapter. And combat...well its fr33kin hard. You cant tank at early age, and you dont have the circles or power at start to take down medium-medium high monsters.
Its probably (as with all games where magic is related) the most powerful character on the high end, if you can make it that far.
As for level 40, wow, good luck. Maybe 3-4 hrs at the Switch room could do that for you, I just didnt have the patience to wait that long, plus I was warrior and all combat/melee skills were maxed. If I was mage I'd probably hang out there till I was 50! just for the extra mana alone

Actually, at level 33 I have maxxed mana, (saved potions and Dreamcall until after I trained to 100) and 6th spell circle, my dex is around erm, 40 or so, and my str is 77. Trained in Sneaking (this skill truly sucks), Acrobatics (love it), 1 lvl of 1h sword, 1 lvl of bow.

The Necromancer

But you must remember. I am not a Magician yet. I am a prisoner that has not joined a camp.
Therefore, until I become a magician I can use any means possible to defeat my opponents.
By the time I pick a camp, I should have 50 strength and Master 1h. I'll save the rest of the skill points to learn magic and buy mana. I will buy runes, not spell scrolls.
I will be ready by then to use strictly runes, no swords, no spears, no bows, and no Pink Teddy.
