Managed to play Summoner a bit today (even though the box said Win XP wasn't supported ). Hmmm... difficult to judge. It somehow reminds me of Final Fantasy 8, which was another RPG I never finished. So far, it didn't quite grip me, but perhaps this will come later. Anyway, I put it away to continue playing C&C Renegade which I didn't like too much at first, either, but today I had a total blast ...

BG2 is a solid CRPG with a lot of personal characters with a lot of different dialogues.
This game is very big too and an advanced combat system in regarding to find the best solution! It's flaws IMHO is the far away bird-perspective for less immersive gameworld experience. The boring AD&D character system, which give you almost no choises when you level up.

I must agree, I really do not like AD&D system of developing of characters...

You are in a very small minority then. There's a reason that the D&D system is the most popular RPG system on the planet.

Wiz 8 has great graphics and fairly interesting characters but combat takes waaaaay too long! Also, as far as size and scope go, Wiz 8 can't hold a candle to BG2.

Search Wizardy 8 forum on this page for info about unoficial, but fully functional "speed" patch.

Summoner is a really nice game and highly underrated. I really enjoyed it, the story is complex and graphics in are really nice, there's lots of sidequests too, and there are segments of the game where you get to sneak around with a thief and have to avoid being caught or backstab the enemies, which I thought was fun and a nice change of pace. I do have to say the latter half and particularly towards the end seemed like it didn't get nearly as much detail as the first portion like they just wanted to hurry up and finish it by that point.

Summoner 2 is coming, but unfortunately only for the PS2. It seems really interesting as it completely turns the story of Summoner on its head and you play from a totally different point of view. The main character is female, and an incarnate of what we were told in Summoner was basically totally evil. However that was just their point of view and the sequel gives you a totally different one, it seems. Some of the local and character designs seemed based off of India, where as the first game had two areas one based on medieval Europe and the other on feudal East Asia.

As for Wizardry 8, I don't think the demo is a good representation of it at all. For one thing it doesn't let you create your party, which is half the fun! and for another it show almost no npc interaction at all when there is quite a bit in the game. It also gives very little indication of the plot, which the game does have quite a bit of.

I wasn't impressed with the Wizardy 8 demo at all, but I really liked the game.

The AD&D rules may be very popular among many Paper & pencil RPG players, because they have enough do keep track on during playing anyway, but for CRPG players it's a stiff and boring system for those who really want to develop characters in a unique way.

I hope the consider making Summoner 2 on PC too. Summoner 1 was a great game!

Yes, agree with "AD&D rules are boring". Nearly every game that uses other system has better character developing.
Take for example Arcanum. Its character developing system is awesome and I really enjoy it after weeks spent with BG2 and IWD which are AD&D based.

Is that why the Infinity Engine games are the highest selling CRPG's since the introdution of the original Baldurs Gate?

And is that why Baldurs Gate, Planescsape Torment, and BG2 have all won "RPG of The Year" awards?

They won it, because they were great, maybe best RPGs ever...
- great story
- nonlinearity
- many NPC
- romances, side quests
- many spells
- good graphics, music...

They were AD&D based RPGs, they did not produce AD&D system...
But I still must say, AD&D is nearly worst character developemnt model I have evere seen in good RPG.

And I know you know it, but everything I say is my opinion, not opinion of everybody, it is natural that someone like something I do not.

Stop bitching, anonymous. Baldur's Gate, et al are wonderful games, and very fun to play. I, however, find the character advancement system in Wizardry 8 more comprehensive and giving me more options. It also gives me skills I can advance every time I level up, with finer granularity than in AD&D.

I'm not arguing for the pen and paper version. I don't even play the pen and paper version. I just really like the Infinity Engine for CRPG's. I've played all of Black Isles RPG's starting with the Fallout series
and I've found them to be the most enjoyable
CRPG's available. Not that I don't try them all out first. I download all the demos for any new game to give it a try rather than going by what someone else says.

Well with no disrespect to Baldur's etc, up until very recently there's hardly been a lot of competition in the RPG department.

Baldur's though may have helped spur more RPG development that we are seeing now, though some of it may also be a timing factor as games like Wizardy 8 and Morrowind had been in development for quite some time.

Wiz 8 has more options than BG2? I think not. Maybe if you're only refering to party creation. As far as gameplay goes I find W8 to be quite restricted. You have a party of people that are all bunched together through
the entire game and the only thing you can do is change their formation. You can't seperate any of your party at any time and that fact alone takes away a lot of options.
One of the best things about BG was being able to split your party up for different battle strategies or sending your thief ahead to scout the area.

Two notes to anonymous:
- infinity engine is very good, I like all games made with it
- party formations, hireable NPCs... yes, you have right, but we are talking about character developing and I think it is really better in Wizardry 8 than in BG series, but it is just my opinion

P. S. Please stop flaming, we can just discuss
