Linux on my next machine?

I have noticed a lot of posts about problems running old games under windows. I have *had* a lot of problems running old games under windows.

Does anyone know how well Linux (sp?) reproduces the old DOS environment?

My current plan is to convert my current PC to Linux right after I get a new one (in about a year or so...). Will this address the problems of running old software or just generate 10,003 new headaches?

Can a Linux based maching be easily networked with a windows machine?

In Linux there is no problem for the networking with Windows machines.
Come to LINUX!!!!!!!
I've 2 running operating system on my machine now:
WinME
Linux (version Mandrake 8.2)(3 CD to download= 1950Mb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

The emulator for Windows is called WinE but it's still "under costruction". There is a release you can download and it works but it's difficult to compile (you must have a lot of libraries) and doesn't work with all the games.
Try to make a search and read what the Linux Comunity have to say about it... sorry

Hi

You can also use VMware, it enable you to run a virtual machine that can
run almost any OS you want. It's basically a PC emulator on which you can
install an OS.

I've never used it to run DOS, but I know that Win98 runs almost perfectly
with it. Display speed is not the best, but in fullscreen mode it should be
sufficient to run old DOS games.

You can test it in Windows if you want (there's a Windows and Linux version)
just download it from http://www.vmware.com

And yes, Linux can easily be networked with Windows, you can even access
shared directory on both machine with the use of SAMBA (check the web for
more info).

Thanks Val. I am not starting this project today, but six months from now (or so) I'll be really appreciative

At the risk of starting a distro war I'd rather say:

Debian rules!!!

Why don't we agree to say 'Linux rules' and leave it at that.
