I apparantly have a Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 128(WDM). Would that be compatible with Morrowind, or would an update be necessary? I'll probably just update it anyways.

Thanks again for all the help!

some help

hey there, jericho, you do know that better cards are available for a good price. i dont know how old you are and if you have a job or not, but you can get a half decent NVIDIA Geforce 2 GTS for under a hundred bucks now, at best buy or curcuit city(or even better a mom and pop specialty store-usually cheaper). i dont think morrowind's going to even run on your current one. maybe.oooh, its going to suck royally though.

Okay, let's see...

I initially experienced CTDs (crashes to desktop) when loading exteriors and interiors, same place as you but with a slightly different effect.

First thing to do, turn down all settings possible:
Set AI to Near
Set real-time shadows to Off
Set menu transparency to Off
Set audio to Low
Set resolution to 640x480 or 800x600, depending on your tastes
Set draw distance to Near

Check if it works now (just out of interest!)

Next - Terminate and Stay Residents (TSRs). What applications are running in the background while you're trying to play Morrowind? Close any other windowed apps before starting the game, see how many programs present in the system tray you can close as well. Ideally, on most systems you should just have explorer and systray running (as listed by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE *once*; click cancel to dismiss the list), although sometimes you need other apps as well.

Lastly - what drivers are you using for your TNT2? The ones from HP or from Nvidia? I was initially using Creative's drivers for my Creative 3D Blaster Annihilator Pro and was getting CTDs. Since this Creative card is an Nvidia chipset (GeForce256) I changed to Nvidia's Detonator drivers and the problem completely went away. If you're using HP's drivers you might want to check out Nvidia's - check if your chipset is supported on their website. You don't have to, but it may help.

Try these out and see how you go. If everything starts to work fine, try turning the settings we lowered above up a bit - once it's working it's worth getting all you can out of resolution and draw distance etc, just to make things look pretty!

Yeah baby! I finally got this game to work ! I picked Dark Elf as my race, Magicka as my main "art", and the Warrior as my birthsign. That gives me a nice mix of Magicka, Combat skills, and the Dark Elf has some nice Stealth stats in there too.

Some of the load times are horrendous on my computer, but it's worth it! I love this game! I make friends with people, then go on missions directly backstabbing these same people. It's great! It gets a little choppy in some parts, but it's nothing I can't deal with. Fairly easy controls to deal with, although I attacked a lady and ended up killing her as the result of accidently clicking the left mouse button. Haha. I'm also going to buy a new videocard on Monday, that should help make my game move more smoothly, eh?

I did the first part of what you said CharlieGuest, and it worked. Just when I thought my computer froze, it all of a sudden booted up the deck of the ship. That was a great site to see! Now I'm figuring out what I can do with these settings to make it better. Thanks for the help everyone!

Excellent!

Glad to hear it's working now! I guesss your graphics hardware was just getting a bit stressed and panicking...

As for upping the settings again, definitely leave Real-time shadows and Menu transparency off (you can live without them), up the AI distance to about 20% of the slider, and try pushing the Draw distance as far as you can bear.

Also, many people on these boards have mentioned an FPS Optimizer. I've never tried it, but a lot of people are saying it helped - you might want to look at that.
