How do I persuade the smith in the New Camp to train me?

There is a man named Horace or something like that that is in the fields with the peasants and he is strong. I don't know how to make him teach me how to be strong. I'm in Chapt.3 and still there is noone that will link to him. What's the deal?

Also, how long is the game from Chapt3 on?

Ok. After you talk to him and find that you have not a reason for him to train you, go to Silas' bar on the lake. After you're inside go into the back room where you see an alchemy lab set up and a man named Jerimia (or something like that). Talk to him and ask about his distillery (spelling?) and then ask him about the rice lord. He will say some thing or other and that Horatio is the only man that could defeat him. Then go back to Horatio and ask about your reason. Say you want to defeat the rice lord and persist in this answer. Waala! 5+ strength!
Oh. I forgot. You have three more chapters ahead of you and they should offer a little bit less than you first three chapters, timewise (mainly becuase chapter 6, is a little short).
