Lucas Arts has issued a press release today announcing that its 'Star Wars' MMORPG 'Star Wars: Galaxies' has now 275.000 paying customers which makes it "the fastest growing MMO role-playing game (RPG) to date" (according to Lucas Arts themselves). |

Well good for them. At least they pleased some mmo gamers, as well as brought a TON of new players into the genre. Tis for the future! Full steam ahead. Here is the formula:
more players = more money = more investors = better games. |

It just proves the theory that Lucas can crap in a box, paint Star Wars on the front, and sell a ton of them. |

Worldwide Lineage has more paying customers and is a better game even if out-dated.Lineage 2 will be cool! About SWG....what Test said. |

don't bait like that.
They have 275k subscriptions, not paying users.
Even if it's true that only a few have canceled.
Anyway 275k is the total of players who have subscribed till now, cancelled acounts included. |

With every patch the game keeps getting a little better. Sure, there's always one thing in there that I may not be thrilled about but it's usually survivable.
Except AT-STs. Who's stupid ass idea was it to give the Imperials a CL125 pet in a game where the master pet class can call a maximum of CL70?
In any case, I barely recognize the game. In truth I've been so busy hunting for the story data disks to much care about what's lacking.
Oh wait. Hunting for data discs with whichever faction getting the most turned in complete sets getting the upper hand in the war is content, isn't it? Damn. I thought I specifically demanded no content allowed!
Oh well. Hope the rebels win... I could enjoy a global +25% xp bonus to everything I do. Then again, I'm advancing so fast as it is I'm afraid I'll cap out within the next month and get bored (definitely the true flaw of the game... but if they slowed experience gain any further ONLY those playing 6 hours a day would get anywhere). |

No, not such a good point... It just proves that there are people out there that enjoy different things than you do. I wouldn't continue playing if the game was total crap... You may not like it and that's fine. But don't judge the 200k + people that do based on your taste...
SWG may not be the end-all, be-all MMORPG of the bunch, but why does it seem so threatening to some people out there that this game is liked by others? I fail to see where the emotional hatred comes from... _________________ =Proud Father of a new gamer GIRL!=

Say what you will, but all i care about is
more players = more money = more investors = better online games
and
better online games = 10% chance for more innovation
and
correctly implimented innovation = improves gameplay dramatically
innovative online-only games so far =
-- Dark Age of Camelot (specifically the RvR)
-- Dragon Empires (sophisticated and well-designed system of PvP)
-- Darkfall Online (sophisticated options and player-governed PvP)
-- Star Wars Galaxies (certain systems are innovative, you cannot deny)
-- Trials of Ascension (introduces a Realism-type of online gameplay)
-- Asherons Call 1 (monthly updates change a dynamic worldset, now a standard)
-- World War 2 Online (never done previously)
The genre has seen innovation but it still is a slow process. This genre is in its infancy. Imagine the kind of online games ten years from now, that will cost tens of millions of dollars to build, have terrible customer support due to overwhelming player populations, and will charge about $30 a month, will have real-time voice communication features, broadband-only, and will have far better gameplay than any single-player will have since work being done in artificial intelligence and virtual worldscapes are even slower to innovate than online manifestations. If you, as a developer, dont want to make innovative AI, the shortcut is to open the gates to thousands of intelligent (mostly) players who will take its place. |

Its very simple Ekim. The makers of this mmorpg promised many things which they've failed to deliver. When someone promises me something I expect it to happen. That might not mean much to you but apparantly it does to alot of people who have been putting down this game. You defend this mmorpg because you like it and thats fine but you've become the opposite end of that which you so criticize. There was a time when creativity ruled the gaming world but that is long gone. Now its a matter of making as much money as you can as quick as you can, never mind the quality. There are games being sold for 50$ that are barely able to install on most machines and that to get them out in time for "this fiscal years budget review".This mmorpg falls into this category.A money making rip-off,taking advantage of poor star-struck fans like you who don't care about quality as long as it says "Star Wars". |

Sorry, had to laugh... If you read my review of the game, I don't think you'd be saying I'm a "star-struck fan" of Star Wars. In fact, one of the things I did mention was that if you take abstraction of the fact that this is a SW game, it becomes better. And the "star-struck" fans, as you call them, are probably the ones that actually don't like the game, because if you take SWG strictly as a SW franchise game, it fails on some fronts.
But I have no problem with people criticising the game and whatever it's missing accroding to them. That's fine. The problem here is that if you read the original newsbit, we are talking about 275k + people playing the game, more than half of which enjoy the game tremendously, and we are being put down for that. Playing SWG is not a guilty pleasure for me. The game is far from perfect, very flawed honestly, but the good outweighs the bad as far as I'm concerned. But I am being called a "star-struck" fan that will buy into anything just because it has a SW logo on it... You're not criticising the game when you say that, you are criticising me and all the other players that like the game.
Besides, if I really were among the "star-struck fans (...) who don't care about quality as long as it says "Star Wars"", I probably would have ran out to my local EB games to buy an Xbox just for KotOR (which I did consider doing, admitedly, but ended up deciding against it). Come on, please don't judge people you don't know. I still don't understand the animosity that this game has engandered... You don't like it. Fine. Move along. _________________ =Proud Father of a new gamer GIRL!=
