I've sneaked down to the New Mine entrance, to free the mine, and as soon as I attack the guards and Jackal, Gorn appears, and as well as attacking the guards, he kills me with his giant axe (this has happened three times now). Now, I don't stay dead. I get up and can heal; then we enter the mine, into an impossible situation because the guards just don't stay dead. Can't possibly win this one. I've only seen one spell that makes undead stay dead - it's very expensive, and I don't really think these guards are undead, anyway. Is this a bug? Or am I supposed to sneak in? What is it that is supposed to happen here?

Just so you know - I did read the other posts on this. But Gorn is not being unfriendly to me. He is not saying I'm connected with a death in the Old Camp. And I am a member of the New Camp now. I don't remember hitting him at any point (I always stayed back on our quests together). He just comes after me as soon as I go for the guards at the gate. And this still would not explain the fact that the guards don't stay dead in the New Mine, and it sure as heck doesn't explain why I don't stay dead.

Hmm... well you are supposed to beat them down and stab them. But personally I prefer using a crossbow to take them all out. You can kill them with a couple of shots instead of just knocking them unconsious and having to stab the guards in order to kill them.
I don't know why Gorn would attack you, I never had that problem. I would kill the guys before Gorn got to me at the bottom of the Hollow.

I CAN'T kill them before he gets down there. He's right on top of the situation. Shooting one crossbow bolt brings him running down immediately.

And I don't understand what you're saying about knocking the guards down and stabbing them. Am I not supposed to kill them?

When you attack a person with a melee weapon you initialy knock them unconsious. They still have a health bar even though it's empty. It just means they are unconsious, not dead. To kill them you have to still have them targeted and perform a forward attack, then you have an animation of you impaling them on your sword.

The Free Mine mission is (a) the last buggy situation in the game and (b) the toughest battle.
As far as I remember this is what is supposed to happen:
-you get order to infiltrate the mine
-talk to Gorn
-walk back to Wolf and talk about the new armour
-back to Gorn, walk to the mine
-when you reach the upper end of the mine Gorn says he will guard your back while you find a way to enter
-you loot all the bodies and find the mechanism
-you kill Jackal and the two guards
-you open the gate with the mechanism
-Gorn arrives
-save now
-you enter the mine. crossfire from everywhere.
-you kill everybody with a red uniform (or at least all guards) and all crawlers
-(the rest reveals itself)

The normal bug is that Gorn attacks you inside the mine if you killed guards. To avoid this let him do the intro-fight and then tell him to guard the door.

My normal bug was that Gorn attacked me outside of the mine. The only way to circumvent it was to leave him with Cord without talking to him again - he didn't accompny me to the mine at all. Thus I could do in the guards at the gate without his interference. He spawned in as soon as I opened the gate.
As for the guards in the mine, I found out that you don't have to kill them to do the quest. I beat up and robbed them all - no kills except for those Gorn made while inside. When I left the mine, everybody congratulated me on the good work (at least Gorn and Lee did ), so just beating them up did the trick here. The only actual casualties were Jackal and the other two guards at the main entrance.

I finally just went with the flow, let Gorn "kill" me, healed and then went on with the quest. I actually found this one to be not so hard because I just killed a guard or two, and then ran outside again. By the time I re-entered the mine, the "not dead" guards seemed to have died for real, and there were only two or three in the whole mine that had to be stabbed.

But there was never a dialogue with Gorn that allowed me to tell him to stay outside until after I had cleared the mine.

basically you run up and talk to him after all the arrows are done flying and you tell him to wait for you, and he'll say "I'll guard the entrance" and he just stands there. They made somewhat of a mistake with the Alignment scripting there, and even though gorn runs around skewering everyone with his axe, he gets annoyed when you do it. (just like you were in a town mashing his constituents right in front of him). Don't be mad at gorn, he's just a bit confused when he gets underground

Best way may be to have Gorn not accompany you at all to the Free Mine before you've killed the outside guards and opened the gates.

This is accomplished by simply running past Gorn after talking to Wolf about the new armour. Gorn will not follow until you initiate conversation with him, so just ignore and run past him. Of course you will have to take out the Razors and the outside guards on your own.

Gorn will automatically "appear" again at the front of the mine once you open it, so kill the guards first, then open the gate. Gorn should be calm with you now.

Gorn's not bad...he's just scripted that way.

I just ran the new mine, and had no problems, except that it was brutal. I attacked the guards and ran back to where Gorn was at the entrance to the camp. He killed the guard that was chasing me. I then turned back and killed the other two guards, opened the gate, Gorn rejoined me and we went in. I let him lead at this point. It seems that just talking to an npc is not always enough to illicit the movie. Keep in constant contact and walk around them, if they do not initiate anything, go on and try again later. I lost Gorn a couple times in the mine, but he always showed up. Sometimes he gets trapped away from where you are. The new mine really shows the great flexibility this system allows. Reading the script and following the clues helps to get the correct responses.
