Spellforce 2: Preview @ Game Daily

Game Daily has the latest preview for the upcoming RPG/RTS hybrid, Spellforce 2. The reviewer not only received a 'tour' of the game given by one of the publishers, but he was also treated to a demo disk conveniently left behind that allowed his preview to be more in-depth than some.
SpellForce 2 actually shares a fantastic similarity to Space Rangers 2, which I'll be previewing in the very near future, in that it doesn't necessarily play by the stereotypical (and crappy) RTS rules. It's a hybrid title that, while its core gameplay is straight up RTS, it incorporates these RPG elements that further enhance the overall experience. These include leveling up characters, talking to various NPCs, as well as purchasing over 1,000 different items and equipping your heroes in real time, so at the options screen you're able to swap out different outfits at will. But Phenomic's gone a step further by allowing you to experience the game from two vastly different perspectives, the traditional top down view that comes standard with any RTS title (point and click) and a unique behind the back third person perspective that not only gives you a more up close view of the action but let's you maneuver your characters with WASD controls, which is perfect for gamers like me who are used to playing action adventure titles.
Head over to Game Daily and read the rest of this enthusiastic preview.

I'm playing a preview version right now (probably the same version that this guy is using), and so far it's really nice. There's some really neat and user friendly features (of the "why haven't they thought of that before"-variety), and the graphics are pretty lovely (loads of details, shaders, fancy-looking bloom effect and so on). I haven't been able to test it extensively yet, but the core gameplay is very similar to the original. The only thing I'm not impressed by so far is the story which didn't really manage to hook me at all.

Anyway, looking forward to receiving the finished code. I'm pretty sure it'll be quite good.

I am particularly enamored with RTS games that let you go down to "troop level" in either first or third person, either as a command unit or actually choosing different units to take control of. Battlezone 2 was the bext implementation of this concept I have ever seen, and the Dungeon Keeper series had that great posession spell. Spellforce kinda had it, but from what Im hearing and reading, Spellforce 2 is going to really make the "zoomed in" portion of the game more than a novelty.

As if I needed any other games to look forward to, argh
