Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (XB360) - First Print Review

The <a href="http://www.officialxboxmagazine.com/" target="_blank">Official Xbox Magazine</a> is the first to get an official Oblivion print review out. Apparently the score is 9.5/10 (just outdone by Fight Night 3 with a perfect 10). In the absence of anything linkable, you can find some comments in <a href="http://www.octopusoverlords.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=25231&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=720" target="_blank">this</a> thread at Octopus Overlords.

A review can only come from a finished game, so unless Oblivion has gone gold this is fake.

That is what you an I think, but there certainly some people and magazins which don't think so (Given this is not a fake).

Don't the press get the games early so they can do the reviews? I thought that was always the case.

I knew it got 9.5/10 (or 95%) before I even looked at the newsbt.

Finishing Oblivion takes 100s of hours. All early reviews are flawed by definition. How much of the game did the Official XBox Mag see? 10%?

I bet Oblivion is a great game, but I donīt buy into early hype reviews.

Hehe ... that's so cute

Seriously though, there are deals cut to get the 'first ever' review, as it sells many copies of the magazine. Think of PC gamer with the 'world first' reviews of HL2 and FEAR, for examples - both of those hit stands before the 'gold' announcement, meaning the reviews were based on release candidate (at best) code. In both of those cases, they were played at the developers site on developer systems with developers present. Fair test, eh? But in the end, even if the reviews were a bit high, they were indicative of two very good games. So I assume this means Oblivion will be a pretty darn good game. That is wonderful for us!

BTW - the gold announcement was recently made here.

It was obvious alot of people are going to give this game a near perfect score because they are fanboys or the publishers paid them to give it a good review regardless of the gameplay like gamespot example they get paid to give good ratings just look at Serious sam a 9.5? lmao.

The in reality wont deserve a score any where near perfect probably in the 7's sure the game is pretty but its about gameplay the combat is improved and looks fun but you're still going to have the boring factor of morrowind with the boring generic quests.

Now lets wait for some reviews where they know what their doing and the first honest review you see wich doesnt write in its review that Oblivion is perfect in every way and isnt a saint or a miracle its gonna get flamed because tons of fanboys are going to have their hearts crushed just like that review from wireplay lol.

Look at morrowind game of the year? More like Trash of the Year crashes every 2 minutes and completly boring.

I said: "Unless it's gone gold this is fake" So I wasn't wrong, the game has gone gold. And i'm well aware of the fact that the first reviews come before the gold announcement, it doesn't change a damn thing about what I wrote.

Don't try to belittle me, idiot.

I don't think Mike has to try too hard to do that, kid.

Well, you said that reviews come from finished games, and the fact that a review in a printed magazine was noted *before* a gold announcement meant they had to review based on code at least a few weeks pre-gold.

I'm not - you made a direct statement, one which I believe *should* be true - I don't believe game reviews should be made from anything but pressed final releases on the reviewer's machine, just as I don't believe that reviews should be based on anything but having played completely through the game ... oh wait, maybe I *am* an idiot ... or at least naive
