consequences of dying or the curse of save/load

Anybody else wish that CRPGs could come up with a good system of punishing dying without making the game too frustrating? It seems like games have given up and just decided to appeal to those that want the game as easy as possible. I'm currently enjoying Morrowind, but I find myself instituting my own rules for dying, mostly that I don't go back to the place I got killed until I've leveled or gotten stronger in some aspect. Still, I miss the sense of danger that I got playing Diablo I or even the small amount of time I played everquest.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, though. As every game that institutes some limit on saving seems to get crucified in the gaming press. I tend to think that might be because they need to get through the game as fast as possible to review it, but seeing as this is a theory I just thought about five seconds ago it could be flawed.

Anyway, just curious if anyone else has given this some thought.

Save/Reload makes a game easy. If you want to play a harder game, why do you make use of it. Only use the Reload ability when the game gets you stuck or lets a rock fall on your head killing you. Since you made use of the evil Save/Reload for getting beat up you shouldn't complain.

OK maybe you don't neccessarily want to start over after putting several hours into a game. So maybe BethSoft could have included an option of removing 1 to 10 ability/skill points (depending on you preference) for getting killed. This could be coupled with not allowing you to press ESC in a fight to avoid getting killed.

well, that would be on the extreme risk/reward scale and since the game isn't designed for it probably not wise. But you're welcome to try it, I have heard of someone playing the game hardcore but again, if the game isn't designed to be played that way it seems like it would be more frustrating than fun.

Anybody come up with their own save/reload policy for morrowind?

There are too many collision and sudden crashing problems in the game. Lets keep the save and load the way it is for safety reasons.

Just control YOURSELF if you want the sense of danger. YOU(The player) can do that by not saving so often inside dungeons.

This was brought up in a topic somewhere in here. I believe Rendelius and a few others have self-discipline when it comes to reloading in dungeons. Save points wont work in Crashowind.

If I load/reload Morrowind a few times within a couple of minutes it crashes to desktop. Guess that's a built-in punishment for all us RPG chickens who abuse the save system..

Abuse is my middle name. Long live the Save/Load buttons.

Not to rub it in, but I haven't had one crash in 20-30 hours of playing. I have had to use the fixme command in the console twice. Then again, a marathon session for me is 2-3 hours.

Now, MOHAA, there is a game that crashed relentlessly. I had to avoid taking certain routes to through that one. Probably a sound card issue on my end, but annoying nonethess.

Okay, I'll let this thread die as evidently I am in the small minority (of one?). This probably should have been in the general forum anyway as it applies to just about every CRPG out there.

P.S. I DID realize that I could enforce my own safe/reload policies (and I do), still not the same sense of danger when your doing it to yourself, for moi at any rate. (maybe because I doubt I can control myself is something terrible happened).

Peace out, and thanks for everyone that replied.

I liked the way save/load was handled in Baldurs Gate; the more you reload the more enemies spawned. But then again, youŽll just level faster, wich many donŽt seem to want...
