I find out something new every time I play Gothic. This was my fifth time and I just found out about learning skills from books.
That book "The Bloodflies" teaches you to remove bloodfly stings, which I had never found out before.

Anybody know any other useful skills that can be learned from reading these books? Might be nice to learn how to skin animals without paying or something.

I'd heard about that too, maybe try checking out the hunters' huts in the woods for books, or other libraries
I know the library in NC tells you how to kill Xardas' 3 golems. And there are plenty of other books laying around in the OC (Thorus has one called Hunt and Prey).

I believe the bloodflies book is the only one that actually teaches a skill - at least it is the only one that taught me anything .

You can get "The Bloodflies" from the mage that's walking around the circle in the New Camp. I bought it from him, but I have no idea what you can do with the stings (except sell 'em).

Selling 'em is a rather profitable enterprise, though..in the early game, when ore is tight, every little bit of trading leverage you can get is a great bonus!

It would have been better if we can craft poison weapons/arrows using those stings.

Hmmm...Bloodfly stings attached to your normal arrows. Not a bad idea! Each one could have done 200 damage or something, giving you an incentive to get the stings.

Man, that would be cool! Custom-made arrows with stings on the points. And you're right, they would probably do hundreds in damage.
