That is most likely what it is. Because G2 is the same as G1 exept for there is no barrier and much of the colony has been destroyed. So its just that the first time you saw it, it was so great, but the sequel didnt really give you the impact that the first Gothic had on you

Agreed what you guys said about feeling of SPACE,which makes first game to feel more "open"..

Also when compared to the story in first gothic, gothic 2 wasn't bad. There just really weren't many BIG surprises unlike in gothc 1(the great invacation, the orc cemetary, things what happened in the mine, about the relations beetween the camps and how those relations changed and final battle in the orc temple and so on..).There weren't those mind blowing moments.I mean when i entered gothic 1, I didn't have slightest clue what to expect.I couldn't imagine anything about the plot or how it developes during the game.Instead in gothic 2 right after the begining xardas tells us why we are here and what we must do. As i said there really weren't that many surprises and plot twistes. Thought those seekers were creepy, a trip to the old walley was scary and leaving with the ship was a nice surprise!

But the biggest letdown for me, were the overhyped dragons, sleeper felt ten times more dangerous than those lazy fat lizzards..

What I would have liked to see in G2, that in some chapter the civil-war between the paladins and the mercenaries had finally begun. Now, everyone was talking about how dangerous it all was, but that fat Onar didn't even get off his chair.

About the dragons, I think the developers just made a little mistake and forgot to make them powerfull

Gothic 1 VS Gothic 2

I think it's like this, when there was gothic 1, I think most people just like me didn't have high expectations. I mean how many times haven't we tried RPG's from small developers that are really bad?,

When it was just such a huge suprise when it was like the best game ever....

So for the sequal Gothic 2, I had extremly high expectations, and I have to say I wasn't dissapointed at all, but it was not a suprise like it was with Gothic.

I suspect that the Chromanin quest is best to be done at the end of the game, i.e. in chapter 6 (my guess), and that it will matter how you have played the char in general, i.e. stole stuff, murdered, knocked down just for fun, etc.. Not 100% sure, though. I mean, if the dang thing REALLY was with different ending, it should be possible to at least SEE these dialogue lines in the game data files.

Regarding the barrier, then I made a slightly incorrect note - I did get through barrier alive and well, though there was no hole. However, this is how it happened: I was just investigating the area near Swamp Camp, and I was over my waist in the water, when I hit the Barrier. It zapped me, but my char had enough HP so that this was just a scratch, really. The Barrier does not do that much damage, but what it does is that it knocks you back. However, since I was over my waist in WATER, the Barrier did not manage to knock me back, instead it knocked my char on his knees. I stood up, made 2 steps and... there, I was behind the Barrier, outside, a free man Too bad I had nothing to do with that freedom..

Back on topic, though: I wouldn't mind some more tension indeed between the city and Onar etc. Heck, I could stroll with mercenary armor into the city and no one blinked an eye. Or with paladin armor to the farm. The least I would have expected would have been some scorn and angry remarks from guards and city people, maybe guards would not even let me in and I would have to take off my armor before I could enter the city. It's not so obvious in general, to know whether someone is a merc or not, but heck, someone strolling into town wearing a merc armor, surely IS merc Or, on the farm, the mercs blocking my way, trying not to let me in, give some snappy remarks, some mercs even trying to ask for the beating..

I've had this nagging feeling that G2 was different than G1. There was just something different about it that I cant really place, but it’s still pulling at me from out of reach.. G2 is still one of my favorites, but I still think the first was more enjoyable to me for some reason.

First off, I think G1 had a much more open beginning. When you start you have no real set goal and feel more open to just exploring. G2 starts you immediately on the main quest and seemed to loose some of the openness I loved in the original so much.

One more thing I think was different was the terrain. G1 was more open with fields and wide paths that felt very free and non-constricting. G2 had narrow paths, and seemed like everything was closing in on you, all on a subconscious level. Maybe I'm slightly claustrophobic, but it changed my level of enjoyment with the game. I think one of the reasons so many people preferred the Mercs was because of the open land and feeling of freedom you had, similar to G1.

Anyone else sense any of this? I just want them to be able to cover ever little area to make the best Gothic 3 (if they do) as possible.

It may be because it was a brand new game and there was nothing like it before. So when the sequel was released it reintroduced you to the Gothic world, but since its not new it made it less enjoyable.

G2 is a sequel so you always have your expectations and when things turn out different, you'll dislike the game or just don't get the same feeling. I think that will be the same with G3. The expectations are even bigger, but that could also make the disappointment bigger if it's not exactly what we'd hoped for..
