EverQuest 2: Earlier Out Than Expected?

Evil Avatar and HomeLAN are reporting here and here that SOE may be shipping 'EverQuest II' a week earlier than expected.
The rumor apparently originates from a date change at EB Games who now list 'EverQuest II' as shipping on November 8.
While retailer info may not always be accurate when a game is months away from release, it usually tends to be *very* accurate when release is approaching.
HomeLAN contacted SOE but they would not comment on a possible earlier release.
Since Blizzard's 'World of Warcraft' and 'EverQuest II' were originally scheduled for the same week, it would definitely not be too surprising if one of the companies would pull a quicker launch to beat the other contender as these two titles are inarguably the two major MMORPG releases this fall/winter.

We shall wait and see...

Not a chance

They're not even in OB yet and SOE has a history of having OB's that last from 2-4 weeks. The game would have had to gone gold yesterday if that were the case. No, EQ2 and WoW should probably be in stores for the beginning of December in time for the Xmas rush.

EB Games also has one of the worst track records for release dates as they pull them out of their ass. Just a few days ago, they had Vampire Bloodlines released on Nov. 8th, now it's the 16th (day after HL2) and it still hasn't gone gold yet. I really wouldn't count on it.

8th November is very possible. SOE will invite more beta testers but they won't make an open beta. Don't forget that the people which decide release dates don't care about beta or not.

Who told you that the game isn't gold yet? Just because there was no press announcement? Considering the strong competition there is no surprise that they keep everything as secret as they can.

I'm sure that if someone would ask SOE if EQ2 is gold already that they wouldn't get an answer.

Exactly. SOE and Lucas also never made a gone gold announcement for Jump to Lightspeed. Lucas just confirmed the street date of October 27 but they never made a "real" gold announcement.
And November 8 is just 16 days away. I think it's safe to assume that EB Games didn't pull this new date out of their rears but that it's based on some sort of notification by SOE.
I also stand by my statement in the newsbit that retailers usually have very accurate information when release is getting closer. No publisher just dumps a game of EQ2's scope into the market w/o giving retailers a heads-up so they can prepare for shipping pre-orders and make space on the shelves etc.

Oh, just checked EQ2 dev tracker and SOE President John Smedley himself said in response to a thread titled: "Re: EBGames says EQII shipping Nov. 8"...
quote:
Keep in mind we haven't put out the offical announcement just yet... but it's coming.

It also puts them a week in advantage to subscription $. EQ2 will burn out the free month first and some parents may not like paying for two games if a child is playing or people on budgets. First in best dressed!

As far as "Gone Gold" for MMO's goes, the only thing that needs to be final is art and, in the case of EQ, large files like the dialog. Everything else is irrelevant since your first login will alway have a patch anyway.

It looks like art and sound are pretty much final for EQ2. It could easily go gold at anytime if it hasn't already.

Is 30 hours a week of play enough to get fully involved in EQ2? The days of playing all day long are gone for me for a while.
