My Research on Ability Multipliers at Level Up

I just posted this on another forum too, hope it's helpful to anyone who's been wondering about this:

"I wanted to figure out the ability multiplier system so that I could get 5-point bonuses in three attributes each level up as efficiently and reliably as possible, so I got out my notebook and created a new character, a Breton Adventurer.

I tried to be methodical, watching and tallying the progress of different skills as I leveled. I found several things. The ability multiplier at level up appears to be derived from dividing the number of skills points gained in the skills governed by the attribute by 2 - for instance if you gain 6 skill levels in Spear, an Endurance skill during the course of gaining the level, your Endurance ability multiplier will be 3x when you level. If you gain 8, it will be 4x. Odd numbers are rounded down. 10 or more points obviously gives you the 5x multiplier. I have tested the upper ranges more than the lower so I may be wrong about the lower multipliers but I am definitely sure about the higher ones.

So for instance, I decided that when I gained level three, I wanted to gain 5 attribute points each in Strength, Endurance, and Speed. During the course of gaining the 10 skill points which allowed me to level up, I also gained 20 points in miscellaneous skills related to those three characteristics. I gained 10 skill levels in Long Blade and Acrobatics (strength skills), 10 in spear and medium armor (endurance), and 10 in athletics and short blade (speed)...Obviously 10 points of these advances were in my major and minor skills. When I leveled up I received the 5x bonuses in my three chosen attributes -without- wasting skill advances - hence the efficiency.

I also wanted to examine the effect of Training. This is an important note: Training up a skill will ONLY contribute to the multipliers if it is in a MAJOR or MINOR skill! I tested this out several ways and believe me training a miscellaneous skill up will NOT give you any additional multiplier in that attribute. "

Interesting. I've been FAR too busy playing to do any work on the subject, although it's on the list.

One question: Have you encountered any limits affecting highest level attainable using this method?

Che, looking into maximums is on the list for me as well but one step at a time, as far as i know no-one has identified where maximums occur. Is level capped? Are characteristics capped at 100? Are Skills capped at 100? I am enjoying playing the game greatly but I cannot help but think about the underlying mechanics - it's particularly useful to note that training miscellaneous skills has no effect on bonuses.

I believe that if skills are capped at 100, then it is in your best interest to maximize stat gains, as you only have your five major and five minor skills to generate levels off of. If skills are not capped but characteristics are, then maximizing stat gains early in the game simply front-loads your character, you would have higher characteristics earlier in the game but the ultra-high levels would end up the same. Hard to say what will end up working.

Anyway I think I would rather be lower level with higher characteristics than vice versa.

Rillian pointed out in the following post that the mulitiplier is "bin" sorted. I have tested his finding and found it to be absolutely correct.
