ok does anyone know why my local map is all black ??
The worlfd map is fine. |

Does it show the cursor for your position?
I have noticed that sometimes when I am moving through an area, that the immediate and sometimes large area on the map (the area around the arrow) is black even though areas that I have been through are shown.

I've had this problem too. Though I usually then just save my game, exit and come back..and it's gone. Weird. |

It's called Fog of War and can be toggled on/off in console with the following command.
'~' to enter console

Yes it shows the arrow for my position and you can grab it to move around.
But all areas are black ive never seen anything on the local map, been doing all my navigating on the world map. |

ok pc and video card is ATI Rage Fury Maxx 64meg .
in a p3 800 on a 100mhz mother board BX6-r2 256meg pc 100 memory
and showing it all on a Viewsonic G773 monitor
i play at 1152x864 get low 20's fps wilderness and mid teens in town or close quarters
I have true colour 32 bit on with a 1152x 864 workbench
Ive tried playing the game at all screen settings 1024x768 800x600 ... and still black tried turning gamma up and just turned local map all grey lol |

I had the same thing happen. I had walked under a log and when I was on the other side, the 'fog of war' quit working. It wouldn't reveal anything. I had to walk back under the log to get it working again.
You could probably leave the area and then return to reset it. |

Hmmmm ive been playing since it came out and the local map has always been black, ive come and gone from areas and it stays black. Todate ive not found any reason why?? |

No!!! i have the Abit suliro gf2 mx and i have the same problem my local map just shows the squares for doors and my charecter screen is empty as well so i can't see my guy in the inventory screen, I think its some kind of bug or something cause alot of people are experiencing it including me.... also when i save i believe its supposed to take a screen shot but....alas it doesn't ...................HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 |

Sounds like a driver problem to me.
I recommend going to a good 3-d website and downloading a series of old and new drivers for your card. Then try them in sequence until you find one that works.
By "old" I only mean previous versions that are DX8.1 compatible, not something that was released 2 years ago....  |
