So why did I become a Mage? |
|
I'm playing Gothic for the second time with the purpose of being a Mage primarily and a ranger secondarily. The first time through it was mostly warrior and ranger (using Scar's weapons in both cases, which made the game easy). So now I have reached the point where I have 70+ skill points and could either become a guard or a fire mage. I choose mage since I wanted a new experience. Well, after the invocation, I'm a 4th circle mage (20 mana) with 22 in strength and 25 in dexterity. But the problem is when I head to the Orc Cemetery, I am woefully weak in dealing with any of the tougher creatures. I looked everywhere to find decent runes but all I could get were a couple of circle 1 and 2 ones. Thus, I can't use magic against anyone and since I put all my skill points into being a mage, my strength and dexterity are underpowered, esp. against orcs, snappers, shadowbeasts, etc. So why did I become a mage? I recall that the higher runes become available later but what I am supposed to do in the meantime?? |

You should be able to buy some nice circle 4 runes from the New Camp, Old Camp and Sect Camp mages.
Even so... your strength and dex should be higher if you've found all the potions. Check the Tips & Tricks section... I think Moonslash did the honours. |

I didn't factor in the potion/artifacts into strength/dexterity, so they would be higher. But the point still remains that I DID check the trading mages at OC/NC/SC and none of them had any circle 4 runes. That's the problem. Was there something I forgot to do or must I wait a little longer? Thanks. |

Your problem is your mana. You're at Circle 4 magic level and you only have 20 mana? You need to increase that big time to be effective as a mage. |

Also, spell combinations and long range bombardments are how a mage survives.
Wave of ice, then bring a rain of fire down ontop of them. |

But what good does mana do if I can't even get the circle 4 runes? I just want to get the runes first then I'll worry about using them. |

I am not sure if Ice Block is available at that time, but if that spell might become quite useful if you have it. _________________ =Farseer=

Do you go right? Or do you go left? A simple decision, yes? No ambiguities. Only the dream of the path not taken! And so one might stand in this place and contemplate for a long while. What will I miss if I go left? What will I lose if I go right? And in my indecision, have I chosen a worse fate? |

Go beat up some Baals, steal their runes. Especially the one under the templar training ground. (I forget his name) He's loaded. |

Last night, I figured out the trigger point to get the better runes and potions. Apparently, when I checked all of the sellers of magic and they had nothing of any value, it was just BEFORE chapter 3. Once chapter 3 loaded (after the invocation?) then I went back to the same sellers and voila, they all had great stuff. The only rune worth using at circle 4 was the storm of fire and that was what I used in the Orc Cemetery.
On a related note, I wanted to replay this game as a mage to give me different experience than the first time. It certainly is different using magic but I'm not sure I like it as much. For example, the first game going through the Orc Cemetery, I was able to complete that 'quest' in 10 minutes using a real heavy-duty sword. Last night using the storm of fire, it took 1 hour. In other words, 2-3 hacks with a sword is a whole lot quicker than using magic against the orcs. I'm not sure if I would want to keep playing if it's going take much longer than what I did the first time. |

If you're looking to rush through the game, then go back to melee.
If you're looking to cause mass destruction then continue with your mage, but it will be slower. I don't see how it would take you 6 times longer to get through the board though. One maxed fireball takes out a Orc Warrior (the strongest type in the cemetary). You could easily walk around launching fireballs from a distance killing every orc before they even reach you.
Remember, you have to use everything at your disposal to get through the game as a mage, when there are large packs of creatures that haven't noticed you yet, drop a maxed ice wave then firestorm them. Half will be dead, the other half mortally wounded. At that point, you have to quickly evaluate how close the enemies are to each other and if it's worth another area of effect spell, or if you need to switch to your fireball.
If you're looking to just brutally own a single enemy, pyrotechnics is the best spell for that. It's a constant drain spell during use, but it stops the enemy from moving while you rapidly lower its hit points. It also will not cause any monsters around it to rush at you. I used that spell to kill off all the fire lizards near the shipwreck and never took a single point of damage. |

Thank you, that was very helpful and encouraging. I did want to have a different experience this time around and I certainly got that. I know now I will get better at being a mage and have to learn what it takes to do so. |

Being a mage is a wonderfully different experience from any other character class. You'll have to use your brain much more than your braun. And I mean YOU, yes YOU, not your character!
True, some battles a warrior class would finish faster, but if you know your stuff, there are many battles a mage can finish off much faster!!!
I'll give you an example: I had big problems with large packs of razors as a mage. Fireballs, Lightning bolts, fist of wind... they all did little damage. Wave of ice helped a little and you can whack one razor after you've frozen the whole pack, but overall it sucked on effectiveness... until I used chain lightning!
That just totally zapped the whole group to a crisp! Used intermittently (so you don't zap yourself) the razors falls like flies! Of course that's before circle 6 ring of death. Then I didn't much care about using any other spell.
But the point is that you have to experiment. Take notes if you must. Every enemy requires a slightly different technique! |

Does the camp that you choose have a serious affect on you as a mage? |
