I ahve a couple of OS on my pc. Make sure you are running he game under win98 or ME. I tried running it under XP but I found the performance to be a tad poor and a bit less reliable.
So if you dont want it to crash often, play it in me or 98
what OS you have? |

I have solved this game twice on Windows XP without any problems.
There is no difference between the games in Windows XP or 9x unless you have an ATI card or forgotten to update your NVidia drivers.
You dont run a game from this year with a four year old operating system.

Ahhh the game crashes when it tries to load up the main map when you leave the cemetery, I would check your data folder and see if all the files are there, but ive had no probs running under XP, http://www.nvidia.com have the latest XP drivers for all cards in one file...
Its only happened to me twice when the game Froze when trying to load a map, never crashed to the desktop which makes me think the file its looking for is missing, reinstall the game over yours, it wont touch your saved games and will place the missing files if any back to where they should be... That is only advice I can give, its certainly not a an OS, Hardware issue as the game woulda booted you ages ago at the start.. |

Dont use Me on a machine with 400 Mb Ram. Not for gothic, not for anything.
Either remove 144 mb, or replace it with a operating system that can handle so much ram.
Using anything more than 256mb on 95/98/ME will reduce your performance. The operating system have a memory handling system that is created to reduce the amount of ram required (with the cost of most of the systems stability) and are not created to handle so much ram.

Well, I don't know if it's any comfort but I've got the exact same problem, kicked out to WinXP when loading after Orc Cemetary....specs: 1Ghz P3, 256Mb SDRAM 133Mhz, 2x45Gb IBM Deskstar 45GXP ( RAID0 ), 1 Quantum fireball 5.1Gb ( OS on this one ), SB Live! + the latest bios and drivers. Since there's no error message I haven't got a clue where to look. |

at one time , iwas getting errors, and crashes every hour . or some places i couldnt even go . i know, i know. BUT.......
I re-installed Windows, sound card, video card, and Gothic...and it has been up every since with no problems
P.S Gothic Saves are so easy to Keep..just drag them to a cd - or a net-worked pc..or just create a C:/New Folder.....put a copy of the whole saves folder in there. afetr you re install Gothic just drag a copy over in the game folder....
and you back in business.. |

OHH..... i Now have 2 almost identical machines....
Both have
Win ME.
Abit kt7 mb
AMD - Tbird's 900 - 1000
WD Hard Drves..UDMA ata 100
1 - has voodo 5 5500 ( and 512 RAM )
1 - has g force 3 Ti200 ( and 384 RAM )
the machine that plays the Best is the one with 512 RAM -voodo 5 5500 ( smooth as Silk )
the one that looks the best (at The Present) is the other with gforce 3..
i took a stick of 256 Ram out of the better running machine ,
and the performance WENT DOWN !!!!!!!!!!
so i put it back to 512

You can compare the memory handling of Windows 9x/ME with harddrives, the memory are stacked together as close as possible, and are 'defragmented'. This procedure is created to save as much memory as possible. The more memory, the heavier this procedure is, and a huge portion of the memory will not be used becouse the system ignores it and still struggle to save memory as much as possible.
This way to save the memory is the reason of most of the crashes experienced in Win9x/ME systems. They are caused when programs are stacked to much, and a program suddenly overwrites another program. Since 9x/ME cannot keep track on where programs are placed, and what data belongs to what program, both programs will probably crash sooner or later, leaving fragments that will keep instability with later programs.
9x/ME is the 'poor mans OS' no more, no less.
9x/ME needs no more than 64/128mb ram.
The OS that needs more memory, Windows 2k, XP, Linux, Unix and Mac OS X is created to use much memory with optimum performance.
Theese OS can place programs anywhere within the memory, and read from anywhere within the memory without delays. Each program gets some 'extra space' to work on when runned under theese systems. This 'extra space' lets them to 'stretch out their feet' and relax, work in peace. If they got a hickup and die (crash becouse of bugs in the program) the OS can whipe that space 100% without leaving any fragments behind.
2k/XP need more memory, about the double, compared to 9x/ME. You need at least 256mb to be able to run in optimal performance in a memory protected windows.
Personally I see 512mb in ram with ME is to buy monster truck wheels to a japanese vehicle. Overkill, and defenitly not a effective use of a car.
