Why? They could not survive without help. Granted, EA destroyed Ultima when they swallowed Origin but maybe the System Shock franchise can continue now.

I assume you mean a System Shock-style game, because EA owns SS and I doubt they will let it go - to either Irrational or T2.

Anyway, why sigh? I have a lot of respect for Ken Levine and Jon Chey and obviously this deal gives them more resources to really kick ass on BioShock. On the other hand, Ken has often talked about doing niche games like TBS - I know he says they haven't lost creative control but it's hard not to be skeptical. And even if it all works out now, how many studios get absorbed or disbanded after a few years? Origin, Ion Storm, parts of Blizzard, Impressions...it's a long list.

Finally - even if it is a good thing for Irrational in every way - I still think it's disappointing that this industry is so hard on independent developers. Perhaps Ken made a bundle of cash and he loves not having to shop for a publisher any more - good for him! But Ken also likes niche games and one less independent studio means one less chance for those genres and games. Best of luck to them - I hope it's everything they hope.

Hopefully Take 2 will have the sense to not crap where they eat (so to speak).

Niche games are still valuable. Sure they don't want to go pumping 30 million dollars into developing one...but within reason they (Take 2) could still profit from them. It'd be nice if they realized this and let Irrational do their own thing (including making "niche" TBS, etc games). If someone at take 2 has a clue I think they'd easily find a way to make a small profit off those games as well. And better them making a small profit than some independent developer making it all on their own (speaking from the publishers point of view). Hey, I can dream right?

It might work out for the best for everybody (including us folks who *like* niche games). The TBS field is so dry that I'll buy almost anything that doesn't just absolutely suck.

At least it appears that T2 aren't going to interfere with BioShock (according to the few quotes from Ken posted today). Of course I guess that remains to be seen too.
