I think I can, but I'd just like to make sure.

You are still guildless, yes you can. Just a citizen of the city for now to make money.

Hey there MageofFire,

Why not be an apprentice and a thief, and then join the monastery?

So let me get it straight it would be best if you do the town quests (which dont require joining the city guard) then after that exp and money go to monastary?

if you want to join the monastary then you become a novice, then the rank after that is Apprentice

Being an "apprentice" refers to learning a "skill" or craft from a craftsman in Korinis, to be a fully fledged fire mage you must first become a novice in the monastery.
Being a thief before joining the mages, generally will not spoil the game, having said that, there are a few VERY CRITICAL triggers that once enabled and i am not going to say which as it is a matter of "morality" it is possible to corrupt the parts of the storyline! this is because as a monastery novice you will still have the thief skills!!!
You can do as much in the game as you like before joining a guild, after that, you cannot go back. Pedro at the monastery gates will confirm this.

Okay now I'm confused. I have to become a novice before I become an apprentice? I was just going to be an apprentice to make some money so I could get into the monastery.

Hey there MageofFire,

Your way is o.k, going to the monastery & becoming a novice (Drake14 says
you go higher rank to an apprentice after a novice) not so, first a novice then do all the monastery quests, (theres quite a few) when you pass- out from a novice you will become a fire mage. I would MOST CERTAINLY make a permanent save game when you meet Pedro at the gate. The sequence while at first seems rather mundane, has MUCH hidden in the storyline, there are advantages that otherwise could be missed. The next time i play that sequence, i will play it several times to get it just right.

@megadav, yes that is o.k
@Sentimal, yes that is o.k

The Idea is as Xerxes712 says, do as you please before joining a guild because you need money, weapon skill training etc' - - - as a mage i would pump up the dex, and the weapon training BEFORE passing out as a firemage because then it costs more to train etc' and is strangely different!

What he is saying is that weapons training, str and dex training will cost you more once you become mage. Twice as much. 2lp for 1 on everything except mana. So, get what levels and training as you can before paying your 1000 gp and your sheep to the monastery. You become Novice to begin with, once you pass the test of fire, you are a fire mage, and once you get the eye of innos fixed, you become high mage, a member of the council in fact.

Ok, but becoming an apprentice (I was going to be apprenticed to Bosper), before I become a novice is still okay, right?

O.k MageofFire,

Yeah do what you want, i've just started a fresh game, i became a thief (nod the head) i also became Bospers apprentice like you, i became a novice in the monastery, i am roaming the land and gaining exp and swordskills to max before i go back to the monastery and do the 3 quests for the test of fire thing, i sneaked in & out of the monastery, (no sheep/1000gp) i DO NOT want to go on to Ch/2 (Lord Hagen) yet because once i do the monastery quest will disappear! for good, (if you get my meaning) and surprise-surprise no
cheats,

@Wulf and Jmurdock- Thanks for you patience and help! @Wulf- Say, I never thought of that. That's pretty ingenious (sneaking in and out of the monastery)! I'll probably still pay though.
