Gothic 3: Character Animation

There are certain indications that the third sequel to Gothic will use the EMotion FX 2 (previously called Liquid Motion) real-time character animation system in addition to its engine (whichever it might be).

We are using EMotion FX 2, because the first experiences and results are very convincing compared with other competitors. This piece of technology offers a well structured and elegant API, many essential features, comprehensive documentation and quick access into the world of animation. EMotion FX 2 enables us to do the next technical step in the field of animation for our forthcoming RPG "Gothic 3".

Michael Rueve, Managing Director, Piranha-Bytes Germany

As it seems, this system will enchant characters in the upcoming Gothic with features like inverse kinematics, facial animation, lip-synching technology and many more...

I've checked the site. Wow, that can be something. Those facial expressions are really good.
Very curious what the end-result will be.

The character graphics of Gothic 1 are still for me much better than any other game. (G2 is, technically at least, even better) This is IMO becauseof the *character* they are all given, the amount of variety and realism and detail and *care* put in to making them part of a real game, not just a flash looking engine with dumb gamey bits put in at the last minute (FarCryin' out loud)
So I hope G3 doesn't have too much focus on flash graphics, but instead has the innovation and vision of the first one - I'd be more than happy with that even if the character graphics were the same as G1 and the environment the same as G2.
BTW does anyone else think that G2 actually has better outdoor environments than 'Far Cry' (for example given the detail of indoor locations visible from outside, like the temple with mountains behind, and because of the sheer volume of unique textures in G2)?

I'm sure Gothic 3 will look better than the previous installments. To say G2 has a better outdoor engine than Far Cry....ummm...NO. But if G3 were to have that type of engine and of course the great gameplay it always has, then it will be the best RPG.........again.....but as long as the gameplay is there, thats all that matters really....just as long as they don't forget about the gameplay

I agree that even with G1 graphics G3 would be great as long as the gameplay was there. I always think what if POTC was done Gothic style? And does any body else think that the controls in G1 were beter than G2 or maybe I got to used to them?

I didn't notice much difference in the controls to be honest - and wasn't there an option in G2 to have G1 type controls?
I said the outdoor *environments* were better in G2 than Farcry, not the actual *engine*. There was just so much more variety and atmosphere in G2 than the other highly overrated game's environments.

I would love it if they decided to use the Far Cry engine in Gothic 3. And I am sure variety in the textures is all up to the designers of the game, not any restrictions in the engine.

Imagine Gothic 3 using the Far Cry engine and Emotion FX 2 for character animation plus the added physics of Havok 2.. That might be my dream game.

I surely hope they don't busy themselfs too much about the looks and thus forget what's Gothic really all about...

Hey Michael Rueve wrote this in december 2003.
And we don't know if G3 will use a custom engine or a third-party one !
Anyway it's a good thing they choose a middleware for animations; in their hands this will be awesome !

Yup, it hardly qualifies as new. But, it came as news to you, didn't it...
