i think MageofFire is right, AMD are have nice CPUs that might be more conveniebt to some people than Intel
i personally prefer Intel but that's based on anyones's personal opinion

Me, I love AMD. They generally have a greater performance/cost ratio than Intel, and they shipped 64-bit x86 chips first - the miser in me appreciates the former, the techie in me delights in the latter.

I've got an order currently being processed for a new machine containing an Athlon 64 3500+, but after the Doom3 benchmarks sided with AMD they've become rather scarce. I'm hoping for a Monday delivery, but the CEO of Scan International has stated that he will have the chip in by Thursday at the very latest.

Are you talking about Intel's 64-bit processor, X? Or a A64 with a different core? Or something else? Anyway, I think the A64 3000+ was a good choice, combine it with a mainboard with nForce 3 and it'll be great.

As a sidenote, I will buy a 3800+ or a 3500+ (both S939) together with a nForce mainboard in about a month, yippie!

@MageofFire: Well, I think my AMD processor was rather unfair to my slagged hard drive. But, think what you will.

OK... AMD or Intel? Product name? Are it for use in PC's at al? (Because there are already CPU's that make these look like less than crap.)

Both, they have figured ou a problem in these ones which makes the CPUs much slower, so they will make another ones but with this problem fixed.

Yes, everything's about to become obselete. Sell your computers now! They're going to be worthless!

On a more serious note, AMD and Intel find ways to speed up their chips every other day - that's rather the whole point of the business. But nothing is currently on the horizon that will give a quantum leap in performance, so while speeds are continually going up they're not suddenly going to go through the roof, and certainly not in the next few months.

The biggest problem at the moment is that silicon wafers can't cope - with a sizeable current passing through tracks in such close proximity, it just doesn't stop charge bleeding from circuit to circuit. Fabs are using smaller and smaller processes, and we're reaching the point where circuits cannot shrink any more. The next bit of interesting technology looks to be synthetic diamonds, but wafers of any useful size are decades off.

Buy a CPU whenever you want, but always remember the following two predictions: (1) if you waited a bit longer you could have got a faster chip, (2) it probably would have been cheaper, too.

New CPU's arent really relevant in this situation. The friend I am building the machine for has a $1000 budget (Excluding Screen), so value for money is the most important thing.

I think we are going with an AMD 3000 XP+ or slightly faster.

Good enough, Chekote.

Btw, X-dANGEr the thing you're talking about. Could it be the dual processor cores? Those are only affortable from next year. Now they cost simply to much.

Maybe, i found an article with a title saying: IF you are planning to buy a computer, don't buy it now, there is a new kind of processors is coming up.
This is why i posted that upthere.
