The old dos structure only took file and directory names upto 8 chars long.

I just tried BaK out using and it works fine. My copy in a directory named "BKRONDOR" so my dos out put looked like:

code:
z:\>mount c c:\
Drive c mounted as local directory c:\

z:\>c:

c:\>cd bkrondor

c:\BKRONDOR>

I then typed in krondor and the game fired right up.

Yes that seems logical to me.

As my betrayal at krondor version is in games i should type

mount c: c:\

c:

cd\games
cd\betray
betray
and the game should start up, similarly for uw2 it should be

cd\uw2
uw2
and that game should start

but they don't i just get told its an illegal command. The frustrating thing is the games are listed, and are clearly there, but I just can't put the commnad in to start them up
e.g if when playing uw2 through dos if you typed
cd\uw2
uw
The game wouldn't start up, because the correct command for the game is uw2, not uw so it wouldn't recognsie it. I have the same problem here, i have the game, but just can't type in the command to get it to work.

Betray is not he excutable file ... krondor.exe is. Try typing in krondor (you might have to run an install routine first by typing in 'install' I am not sure what this file does other than configure hardware for sound).

That's what I recommend as well. Never had any problems running DOS games with that, and it uses a simple interface that does not require the knowledge of arcane DOS commands. It can be downloaded here.

I tried to download the vdm sound emulator program, but once it has downloaded and I go ot install/run the program it says windows cannot open this file.

Some icons can be extracted, or installed, but the icon for this download is the one where you can't do anything with it.

Also the dosbox command for return to krondor didn't work either.

The game has been downloaded, extracted and put into a file titled "games" directory. When I look through my games the filename is "betray""1

I don't know what the "" is supposed to symbolise, but this is what the game is callled. I just can't get it to work, or any of the other games listed, even though it tells me what they are called, and it should just be a matter of copying them.

The only thing I can think of is that the "" symbol I don't understand which appears after the title of all the games has something to do with it. Can anyone tell me what this symbol means, and why dos won't except the name of the files I put in (since they must be the name of the games, as I press dir/p and it tells me the name of the files in that directory)

Okay this is my last try at this, and then I am out of ideas!

In Dos mode go to the BaK directory and type "Dir *.exe"<enter> this should return a list of all executable files. Try these. If none of those work try "Dir *.bat" This will return a list of the all the DOS batch files. Sometimes the older games used batch files to launch.

My copy of BaK uses the file krondor.exe to run.

I don't know what else to tell you.

You probably downloaded the wrong file. Do you know what version of Windows are you using (Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, or XP)? You can find out by the screen that shows up while Windows is loading.

Great news, I've finially got dosbox working after many hours of struggling

Special thanks must go to Lintra and others for helping me thorugh these difficult times

The problem was that I had the betrayal at knrondor file inside c:\games file. Therfore I was able to type in games, but not actually play any, as the files were contained within files.

I changed the name of the file to "krondor" and removed the file from in the games directory, to a location on its own in the c:\ directory under my computer.

Then simply by typing in cd\krondor (return) krondor the game came on.

Hopfully I will be able to load other games in the same manner.
Therefore if anyone would like to recomend some great old rpgs (anything like might and magic/wizardry/underworld games) then I would appreciate it.

So far my list for games to acquire contains
1.underworld 2
2. Anvil of Dawn
3. Dragon wars
4. Albion

Does anyone know of any others?(preferably 1992-1998)

Thanks, and again thanks to tho'se who helped me, and listened to my whinings about dosbox.

I am sure I speak for goshuto as well when I say: "Glad to help. Come back any time."

Let us know how you like the games.

Thanks, one final question
Is it possible to increase the size of dosbox to full screen?
The maximise button is disabled, and I wondered if ctrl f or something similar would increase the size of the screen available.

It dosen't matter too much if you can't i'm just glad to have the old favourites up and running. Watching and listening to the opening scenes from underworld 2 certainly brought the memorys flooding back.

Tho'se were the days my friends

Okay, for a fullscreen open open the dosbox.cnf file, and set FullScreen = True.

I also changed cycles to cycles = 10000 this sped up performance.

I have a dosbox.conf file (5kb) but I when I try and open the file it says "windows cannot open this file" to open this file windows needs to know what program created it.

I then have 2 options, select the program from a list

Or go on line to find it.

I have experimented with both ways, but none of the choices I have selected work, and going online hasn't helped either.

Once again more problems

Congrats on getting the game running. You're about to enjoy the 2rd best stroy driven RPG ever made, well at least in my opinion.

As for your probelm opening the config file. Just select the option to pick a program to open it, then when the next window opens make sure you uncheck "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" just to aviod any problems, then highlight notepad and click "Ok". Edit your config file to your liking, then close it and make sure you click "Ok" to save it as it's closing.

Thanks Ioskeha, thats solved the problkem, and it works.

Lintra I have also taken your advice and changed cycles from 2500 to 10000, as underworld 2 in partiuclar was running a bit strange (slow jumpy movement), yet other games such as day of the tentacle were fine.

I suppose I can always change this number around to suit the individual requirements of each game.

Now to play them all
