can't decide

its summer and i need a new game. granted i could try and do something "useful" with my time, but honestly, whats more important than saving peasants and getting a bigger sword?

so i ask you, o wise veterans of CRPGs: which of the above games is worth my time, and the time of so many other aimless teenage D&D junkies???

If I had to chose to play one of these for the first time, Arcanum would be my #1 choice.

Depends on your style preference.
Arcanum was great just as Fallout 2 was - varied character developement.
From swords to rifles.

I am now playing Arx Fatalis - Sometimes a break from pure slash & hack is good. First person perspective. Best thing is do a search and try to find
the Demos, then decide.

DD or Arx, but of course, imo.

With regard to your list I'd say Divinity would do. But being myself another crazy D&D junky I'd rather recommend Neverwinter Nights or Icewind Dale 2, both latest D&D games and not bad ones, too.

Divine Divinity is the best out of those. Mainly because there are lots more quests, lots more areas, lots more action, et cetera. However, i really really liked Arx Fatalis also. I cant make up my mind about those two, whether DD is better than Arx. I think they are equal. Never did like Arcanum.

DD, ARX, GOTHIC2 They are the 3 best depending on personal preferences. Which do you like, Ultima, Underworld, or Gothic? My suggestion, play all 3 and really enjoy yourself!!

Tom,

Based on what I remember of your likes and dislikes (it's been a while hasn't it - Hi!), I would suggest DD. You get to save the world over the bodies of thousands of baddies. You can do it via sword (a ton of fun) or spells, or a combo. You start off generic and weak and end up, welll, you'll see

Tough choice there...

But I'd say Arcanum. Sure, the skill system is a bit on the bad side. The story is lacking, and the combat can be... "chuckleable" depending on how you play. Despite that, Arcanum is the best you got there IMO.

Divine Divinity. Arcanum in second place.

hey lintra

well i went with arcanum, mainly because i made my decision based on like the first day of poll results. blew threw it in like...however many weeks its been.

i gotta say...that was pretty good man. just like....the open-ness you know? i almost kinda liked it better than baldurs gate. the story was kinda screwy. it went from "oh this is all about magic vs. technology" to "oh this is all about good vs. evil" back to "oh this is magic vs. technology" and ending with "oh...wtf?" but i walked away feeling satisfied despite a slight feeling of randomness, and i was pretty wrapped up in the story for a good while.

i really like the classless character generation thing. maybe they could have executed it a little better, but the freedom is there, and it definitely delivers. i expected it to be one of those games that has an original idea but thats pretty much all it has going for it. but it has an excellent immersion factor. all those random little pieces of junk, useless to absolutely everyone, unless you need it to make like an uber rifle or something, added a level of depth.

the point is, it was a really cool experience, that almost seemed like a real world. we should see more games like this and less games like...morrowind and dungeon siege, where everything seems so static. (had to throw that in, just to make trouble )

anyway. dd is next on my list; thanx for your votes and opinions and advice and whatnot, guys. but i think i might try arcanum again first...try it out from a few different angles and all that jazz. as near as i can tell, it must have a pretty good replay value. if not, no biggy: the first time around was cool enough.

PS since im here, thief is good too. got a combopack of thief and thief 2 for like $9.99 the same day i got arcanum. (yeah i know...that was pretty random wasnt it?)

Just for fun, try to have the character with less than 5 intelligence. The dialog is a killer.

I hope you're not talking about the single player campaign, in NWN. It's not fun, neither is Icewind Dale 2...

Unless your idea of a fun game is something completely linear, with no real roleplaying aspects at all and with a good vs evil plot, then stay away from those two games

No role playing at all? Strange... I could have SWORN that there were various dialogue choices in both NWN and IWD 2, and that the dialogue choices are affected by race/intelligence/speaking skills. Furthermore, that there were different ways to complete quests etc. Plus, a good skill-system that affects gameplay. FAR BETTER than what you can say about games like Gothic.

Trashing something because it has a good vs. evil plot is NOT the BEST thing to do... considering like 90% of the RPGs out there has an EVIDENT good vs. evil plot (examples: The Gothic series, the BG series, Arcanum, the elder scrolls series, Betrayal at Kronodor, Divine Divinity, Dungeon Siege, the Fallout series, the Diablo series, the Final Fantasy series, Deus Ex etc. etc. etc.)
