PC.IGN has posted a quite positive review of Gothic 2, rating it 8/10:
Gothic II has some great content and quest progression lying underneath an incredibly clunky exterior. If the combat didn't have such a high learning curve, the difficulty ramped up a bit slower, and the interface wasn't terrible, this would be a pretty good game. There's a lot of game here that would certainly appeal to the action/RPG crowd. I'm not sure why it's so hard to create useable and fun melee combat in a third-person RPG made for the PC, especially with so many great examples to look at, but Gothic II certainly makes you wish for some. It could have been a really great and fun game. As it is, it has some really good things and some really annoying things that make average to good gaming experience on the whole.

I haven't played G2 yet, but this reminds me of the G1 reviews. 20 or so points would be taken off for the non-standard interface. When I ignored the reviews and bought the game, I found that the interface could be a pain, but it wasn't really a big deal once I became accustomed to it. _________________ "You two are a regular ol' Three Musketeers." |

Yes. And the controls in G2 are clearly improved over Gothic.
Many of the points this reviewer criticizes in the paragraphs about the interface are simply factually wrong. If he uses strong words like "Lame!", "horror of the interface" or "awkward controls" he should better make sure he is right, IMO. As it is now I only have the impression the reviewer is unflexible and biased, at least when talking about controls and combat. Did it ever come to his mind that running away is an option ?
At least he seems to have actually played more than chapter 1. One of the screenshots looks like chapter 3. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

Here in America we are way too obsessed over 'polish.' A polished game (elegant interface and whatnot) is nice. But I can think of a few American CRPGs of hte last few years with a great polish and very lousy gameplay, but then get high merits for such a 'polished and elegant' game.
Gothic II is fantastic. It isn't too polished. But the amount of gameplay and the detail of the gameplay are wide and deep.
If I have to choose between 'polish' and 'gameplay' I choose gameplay any day.
Anyway, the Gothic series reminds me heavily of the early Ultima series. These games are crafted by a small developer with a great love for making games. And it really shows. Even if it isn't totally polished. _________________ The Poster Previously Known As NeptiOfPovar |

God these criticisms of the interface and combat really annoy me. It took me maybe an hour to learn the interface and then never thought about it again. Similarly, I learned to work with the combat mechanics and actually in a way found them more realistic then other games. I don't know many actually people who could do smooth acrobatic ballet like moves when wielding a heavy 2-handed sword.
The only valid criticism I found with G2 was the lack of balance in the late game. I appreciated the difficulty early on and built up my character before going into areas that were too dangerous early on. Unfortunately your character is just too overpowered in the very late game. |
