I'm sneaking, why won't my skill increase?

My character is a Nord Adventurer, level 5. Sneak is one of my primary skills. So far, it doesn't seem to be increasing. I thought that when the sneak icon is showing, then no one sees me and I should gain some experience. I haven't tested this out with pickpocketing yet, so I don't know what effect that may have. I thought that with a lot of creeping around, it would help me gain "experience". Any thoughts on what is happening?

Yah...

The "sneaking" icon appears whenever you aren't detected. Your skill, however, only goes up when you are both undetected *AND* there's someone there to detect you!

Try sneaking around the middle of a town with lots of people around, or around a crowded inn. Whenever you're sucessful at sneaking then, you'll start to get points towards an improve. (Hover the mouse over the sneak skill and note the current level - after lurking in corners or tiptoeing around for a while check it again.)

Naturally, if you suck at Sneak to begin with, you'll take forever to get anywhere. If you've got below about 20 Sneak, train it up first. I hear you can improve your sneaking skills by wearing lighter shoes - don't try clanking around in Iron Boots!

BTW, I found an excellent pair of shoes somewhere - Shoes of Sanguine Stalking I believe - +5 Sneak constant effect. Nice. Not a clue where I got them from though!
