Lord of the Rings Online: Playable Classes @ Official Site

A new Team Letter at the official Lord of the Rings Online site reveals some of the most eagerly awaited information yet, Playable Classes.
When J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, there was no such thing as an MMORPG; no such thing as classes or hit points or combat systems. Still, from his works sprang what we now call the fantasy genre, and traditional races such as Elves, Dwarves, and Hobbits (Halflings) are pervasive in fantasy settings.

Maintaining the themes that are so crucial to The Lord of the Rings is a priority for the LOTRO design team when creating the systems in the game. Classes are especially challenging because magic can be very subtle in Middle-earth, and most MMORPG players expect (or even demand) to be able to play spell-casters as well as the more clearly-defined classes like warriors, rogues, and healers. It was Morale that helped the classes coalesce and fall into place.

This week, we'll introduce you to the classes by giving an overview of what they are, and a brief description of how they work. Stay tuned; we'll continue to flesh out the information on the classes through site updates on a regular basis, with information like which races can play each class, special abilities, and more.

Thanks for your patience while waiting for us to unveil the class system in LOTRO. We'd love to hear what you think about the classes, so don't hesitate to post your comments on our forums.

And now, without further ado: Playable Classes in The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar™.

Innovation

No. Please. Why? Why do all of these game developers feel the need to make every MMOG exactly the same? Cookie cutter classes and forced grouping? Dress it up in really original class names and lore all you want. Nothing innovative here, move along please.

Guardian

A doughty fighter and protector of the weak "Tank" blah blahblah willing to draw more blows unto his self blah blah "Taunt" blah blah

Burgular

Blahblah an unexpected strike from behind "Backstab" blahblah unassuming on her own "Can't solo" a burgular would be wise not to be caught alone "No really, you can't solo, you must group and be social"

No no no no no. So narrowminded. This is Lord of the Rings, why can't I play a big blonde guy from Rohan who chooses his own path in life?

As soon as I launch the game, I sure enough can be a big blonde guy from Rohan but any sense of adventure and mystery about where my life will lead is non existent because if I choose to be a Guardian, I know I will be grinding exp in groups as a tank, just like I did in Everquest or World of Warcraft.

At character creation I can choose to be a Hobbit Lore Master?

Hobbits are not born lore masters! They do not have classes. They farm, they run taverns and sweep their porches and sometimes get caught up in events that force them to take up sword and sorcery to battle evil and save Middle Earth. That is what Tolkein was saying. Simple folk can be heroes too.

The article from that "Team Letter" is disgustingly ironic. Look at this quote:

quote:
When J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, there was no such thing as an MMORPG; no such thing as classes or hit points or combat systems.

And their was no Everquest so why carbon copy it?

I whole-heartedly agree,another dud of a mmorpg.

P.S.
I've got a lvl.56 undead WL on WoW and I have never been in a group.I have decent equipment and even a few purple looted items.I regularely go against mobs 3 lvls. above me.Only problems I have are in the dungeons and those problems are acceptable seeing as I can solo the rest of the game.
