curious as to cpu / geforce 4 performance

so only having an 800 mhz proc seems to be a problem for me. I notice some other people have gf4's as well. i was wondering what you guys get?

at %50 view dist, standing on the plank from the ship (in the begginning) looking straight at the town the plank, i get 20fps and it gets worse from there.

what cpu / video are you guys using and what fps does it get? Iam using the anti safedisc crack.

nshmourne, at this point you are cpu limited. Upgrading your cpu will greatly enhance your Morrowind experience. I also have a GeForce4 and went from a Duron 750 to an Athlon 1400. I couldn't be happier. Cpu upgrades are cheap providing your mobo will handle it.

For comparison, I have an xp2000+ but only a GF3 (non ti). I get 27 fps standing in the same spot, but with view distance maxed. I can play with vid card settings all I want, has minimal effect.

Geforce 4 will make a huge difference.. Geforce4 ti4600 is what you want if you can afford the rediculous price. Donot get any mx geforce. They are for desktop use not games. But you will want to upgrade both cpu and vid card to keep a good balance.

You'll probably have to upgrade your memory as well. Duron chips were 100MHz FSB. Anything greater than a Duron will require 133MHz FSB.

I have a Duron 900 w/GF4 4400 and only get 6000 on 3DMark - I seem to remember reading somwhere that AGPx4 doesn't kick in properly until you have a 133FSB. My next purchase is a ThuderBird 1.4 and half a gig of 133 memory.

Have Fun

I get below 10 (rarely) -25 FPS in outdoor areas and above 80 (sometimes even above 100 FPS indoors). Wouldn't call it choppy outdoors. Wouldn't call it smooth either. It's somewhere in between but nicely playable for me . Average FPS are probably somewhere around 20.

Settings: 1024x768, Pixel Shader: on, Shadows enabled (lowest quality), view distance maxed out, Anti-Aliasing: off, V-Sync: off, 85Hz refresh rate

System: Asus A7V KT-133 Mainboard, AMD T-Bird 1400 (100MHz FSB), 512MB SDRAM PC-133, GeForce4 Ti-4400 (which is running on Ti-4600 core/memory clock, i.e. 300MHz/650MHz)

Turning shadows completely off gives me another 5 FPS outdoors. BTW, those experiences are only based on the starting area of the game. Haven't gotten too far into it yet .

I guess I should post it right here and not in the other thread , but anyway: for your comparison:

A friend of mine :
1024*768

Athlon 500
256 MB SDRAM
Kyro II

Outdoors 5-9 FPS
Indoors 9-12 FPS

Me:

1024*768
75% View distance
25% AI
10% Shadows
Pixel Shader

Athlon XP@ 1444 MHz
384 MB SDRAM
GF3Ti200@230/500

Outdoors: 15-35 FPS
Indoors: 40-120 FPS

Are there laggier places than Balmora? I havent seen any worse that that.

You dont need a Geforce4 to run smooth with distance FAR(if you have a Geforce 3). Get a new motherboard and chip(double your current clock and bus speed). keep the pc133 ram and cheaply get 1 gig of memory. At the most, itll cost less than replacing the graphics card. I stagger cpu and gpu upgrades, and TWEAK like a fiend.

Keep the same sound card, video card, and case. Mabe drop in a slot fan to keep it cool...

I'm gonna get one of those motherboard and chip kits at www.tigerdirect.com .Then I'll wait until that geforce 4 drops $100 in about 3 weeks...

A few tips

Thou shouldst make sure to perform required maintenance:

-defrag, memory flush, newer drivers and BIOS, virtual memory settings, ect.

Some tricks I did find mayhaps increase thy performance, but marginally:

-make thine AGP aperture to twice(2x) thy RAM size, if possible
-run DxPanel and turn OFF "Direct Sound Debug"
-set Z-buffer to "16;24" in thine Direct3D control panel
-run game at HIGHER resolution (MORROWIND doth work better on mine machine if I do set 1600x1200 than if I do choose 1024x768 - wherefore, I know not!)
-reboot thy machine on the *same* desktop resolution/depth as thou intend to use for to play
-in MORROWIND.ini set "Max Fps" to 60, "Exterior Cell Buffer" to 256, "UseQuadratic" to 1 and "UseLinear" to 0
-in particularily bad areas, if thou dost switch to 3rd person view, the *same* framerate doth appear smoother (the cause be that thou wilt move thine view in less degrees of arc to look around)

I do play the game at 1600x1200 on a RADEON card, 800 Athlon overclocked to 920 with 256MB PC133 RAM.

Lowest (atop Balmora tower) = 10-11fps
Highest (inside buildings) = 60-65fps
**Average ext (towns) = 15-20fps
**Average ext (wilderness) = 25-30fps
**Average int = 35-45fps

Best o' luck to thee and may the purses of the beasts that thou dost slay be full of gold
