Gothic: funkiest rpg ever |
|
Having played about 20 rpg's since Ultima 1 came out (OMG A 3D DUNGEON) I can honestly state that Gothic is the oddest one of them all.
And its a blast.
Yes the interface is a disaster; those of you who disagree are VERY tolerant and probably liked the Coleco's Phone Pad controllers as well. Swimming is hell, and I've gotten killed far too many times because the controls simply didnt respond in combat.
Yes the manual is obviously some attempt at German humour. Finding controls out by accident doesn;t qualify as fun.
And the bugs....oh the bugs...I'm having a hard time finishing Chapter 6 simply because the game is crashing every 20 minutes. And yes I have the latest patch.
The NPCS are simply the best ever.
The story is engaging enough...its not Baldurs Gate but it will do.
The game is just so darn funky/quirky im small fun ways that it keeps you interested.
Nice job Pirhana. |

Let me tell you this.
The controls don't downgrade Gothic. Once you get use to them, you'll find them pretty interesting and swift.
Gothic is not odd. It is special. _________________ =Farseer=

Do you go right? Or do you go left? A simple decision, yes? No ambiguities. Only the dream of the path not taken! And so one might stand in this place and contemplate for a long while. What will I miss if I go left? What will I lose if I go right? And in my indecision, have I chosen a worse fate? |

I agree, the controls might be a little odd for folks who haven't played mayn shooters, but overall you get used to them very quickly...

in my opinion the controls are very good... the only appoint that i could make that the trade screen isn't very optimized... but i like it too...

Thanks for the warm welcome
I managed to get past one of the "mage skeleton" crash bugs and finished the game last night.
Random thoughts:
I particularly enjoyed the fact the the Sect followers still say "May the Sleeper Be with You" even after they know hes an arch demon
I can't remember a more satisfying moment in an RPG than finishing off Gomez with a pick axe. Classic.
On the controls:
Its not so much that they are difficult to use but more that they don't seem too logically thought out. Once you get used to them, they do the job adequately. Although it does seem a little odd that I can't interact with the world(beyond fighting and moving) while I have my sword out...
I actually have been playing gothic exclusively for about 2 weeks now because its almost keyboard only interface was a blessing for tendinitis inflicted right wrist.
I am looking forward to Gothic2. |
