Below average PC gameplay experience (info, not complaint)

PIII800
128MB SDRam w/ 100mhz bus speed
40GB HDD
NVidia Riva TNT2 Model64 Pro
Via chipset mainboard with onboard sound (causes MAJOR problems in system)
Win98SE

So, after several days of fiddling, my solution was rather simple:
Everything turned down on MW Options

Did NOT change virtual memory settings (with my settings, crash every few minutes ;-0)

DID apply unofficial no-cd patch, (but not sure it's really done anything)

Force Windows to use real memory before virtual
Edit system.ini to read ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1

Edit Morrowind.ini
Disable Audio=1
Font 1=century_gothic_big

Results? Relatively stable gameplay, some freezing as loads occur, one crash to desktop in 7 hours of play, NO sound

So, I'm able to play and enjoy the game, but I'm definitely going to upgrade/buy new pc/laptop in the next couple of months....or not. ;-p The editor works fine so I can build stuff and post it, but for regular gameplay, well....XBox version will be out soon.

Bottom line for me? The performance tweaking necessary for me to play at all was not enough of a pain in my tuchus for me to give up.

Rock on, Bethesda!

Sounds like you've got the same system as myself, only with slightly less RAM.

What framerate were you getting?

Thanks for the .ini scripting. I'll be sure to try it once I get my copy.

No sound? Is that because of the onboard card, or something you purposely tweaked?

Again, thanks for the info. Very helpful.

I never look at frame rates...It's either playable or not. If I can't enjoy it (ie, it crashes constantly, freezes, stutters until my eyes bleed) I won't play it.

The sound is turned off in Morrowind because there is NO compatibility between the onboard VIA sound chip and Morrowind. Ergo, the game crashed often and left some very nasty messes.

I will have to upgrade the RAM though. 128 just aint gonna work. After about 40 minutes, it starts to slow (mem is not being release as I move from area to area and I don't know HOW to fix that!) and I have to reboot.
