Should I play as a fighter-type the first time through? I do like mages, but they tend to be harder to play the first time through an RPG, so I often start as a fighter. And I must say I am looking forward to being able to stick an axe in Mud's back with enough strength to kill him.
Or is it possible to spread skills around enough to become a good all-round character? Would that make a very weak everything? I'm definitely going for sneak and lockpick skills, and level 2 archery no matter what, cause I'm sick of selling raw meat for money. |

Sneak and lockpick are worthless. To lockpick, just save, guess at the combo, then write it down, then re-load and use it.
A warrior should have lots of strength and be master of both 1 and 2 handed weapons. Also if you want to be a Warrior and a Mage, become a Templar. They have good armor, and up to the 4th Circle of Magic. |

I think fighter - master of 1h, 2h and maybe master of bow or
magician - 6th circle of magic, master bow, trained 1h
are both not hard.
Fighter is stronger and can have more HP, but bow allows to mage to kill most of hi enemies from distance or from places where they can not go.

The first time through the game you donīt know what to do, where to go, how strong the enemies are, how many supplies you have. You automatically tend to be very careful and try to avoid mistakes.
The second time you know what to expect, you play a lot faster, explore areas you missed the first time and take more risks. You are more skillful in combat, use more and funnier spells. You simply play more elegant.
I would play a warrior the first time. Concentrate on strength and weapon skills. If you have some skillpoints to spend learn a ranged weapon.
20-30 mana is enough to cast 2-3 serious spells (scrolls) if needed.
Transformation scrolls are useful. Bloodflies are fast, lurkers can breath under water, orc dogs wonīt be attacked by orcs.
Mages are at least equally powerful, but more complicated to play.
Increase str and dex with learning points until you (a)reach 100 or (b) decide you donīt want to maximize this stat. Then drink permanent potions.

So far, I've increased my Dex to 22 and strength to 18, I've got the sneak skill, bow skill first level, and one handed weapon level one. Should I start giving myself magic skills at this point? I'm kind of enjoying just being able to walk around the Valley without getting stomped on all the time. There are a few nasties out there I can't kill yet, but only a few at this point in the Chapter. So I'm debating whether I should go for weapon and strength skills first, and then get some magic later. |

Simply put, there is NO right answer and NO proper way, nor best way. If you WANT to play a jack of all trades but master of none kind of character, then by all means spread the points around. As it is with that type of character - it will not be as good at things as a specialized character but if that is what you WANT, then do it.
The pure melee warrior is the easiest to play - as in most games. In this game, the pure (and I mean pure) archer is likely not possible to play AND finish the game (there are some creatures the arrow simply will not harm enough to get past them).
The Mage is VERY powerful when played right - when played poorly, he is a miserable character so again, it depends upon you.
If playing a melee (as primary), you will want strength maxed out as fast as possible with at least the first level in 1H and 2H (master can come later and isn't as important).
If you WANT to be primarily an Archer, then get Dex up to 100 as fast as possible and get bow (and or crossbow) up to at least first level. Then you will need to decide if you want melee as your backup skill or magic - you will NOT have enough skill points to do justice to both backup skills in this game - but either will get you past the creatures that the bow cannot handle.
You pick which you WANT to play first. I did pure melee first and do not regret it.

However you wish. I'd say, rely on strenght first, dex later, and when you're maxed out there, magic. But it's, of course, all a matter of personal taste. Last time I specialized in dex first, magic then, and strength last - though it's easier when you go for the brawler type of skills in the beginning.
