The MM - series is based on 3 main characteristics:

combat
character development
getting equipment

u fight bad guys - get treasure, experience and levels - fight bigger bad guys and so on.

it is NOT a series with much communication and story like Planescape Torment - it is an old school fighting rpg with many quests and riddles to solve.

HiddenX, have mentioned the basics, but I want to specify some of it.
1. First person party game (immersive gameworld experience), not so superficial as Planescape and the BG serie.
2. Complex and much more interesting character develop system than the AD&D games.
3. Often good stories (MM7), but the interaction with NPC's is very limited, and determined.
4. Mediaval fantasy world with a touch of Science fiction.
5. The graphic is dated (M&MIX will change that), but fully adequate.

Don't forget the sound. The sound is actually pretty damn good, since at least MM4.

The sound is adequate, but I miss the more modern enviromental sound effects, and also better Surround sound effects. A 1. person like the M&M series game is perfect for Surround (3D) sound.

3DO are excellent at music. I even have some HoMM 3 mp3s in my winamp at all times together with the rest of my music.

Well, I was really talking about the sound effects, rather than the engine used to play them. I don't go much for 3d sound, but my memories of MM4 for example are mostly the voices, such as the voice of the teleporter ('Where to?'). The Might and Magic games have lost a bit out in the technology race, however, their sound effects are very funny and add to the experience. Take for instance the shopowner that curses you when you leave his shop without buying anything.

By the way, I just started playing MM6 again. It ages pretty well in my opinion, although the scaled sprites look awful.

Just some thoughts about the current available info's of the game:

Title: "Writ of fate" or "Tales of the Ancient". I don't know which is correct, or if one of them is a sub-title? I've heard that "Tales of the ancient" is the latest mentioned, and if so I guess we still will see some Science fiction fantasy in the game.
Not that the title "Writ of fate" ensure us from Scifi, but I may still be able to hope!

4 common Races: Gone are the more exotic races like dragons, vampires etc. I don't mind the exotic races, but their powers was often too unbalanced.

8 "Normally" Character classes: Exiting how you have to develop your character into a class instead of deciding it from the beginning. This will sure give life to a lot of discussion versus the old system, because they change what is not broken. But lets keep an open mind!

Real 3D monsters, objects, and interactive (move, destroy)enviroment, and all this in full screen realtime 1. person view with a top notch engine. Can fantasy worlds be more alive!

Still turnbased/realtime combat: Great!

New spell system: Should make more spells more usefull during the hole game. Good idea.

More alive NPC's, also those who follow your group. Can only be better.

New conversation system: About time!

Very improved monster/NPC AI: Not to hard to achieve, and very welcome.

Can't at the moment see how this game can fail to fullfill my high expectations!

I agree with almost all of the points, especially on the class system. I haven't played MMVIII, but MMVII's class system looked pretty damned good to me.

However, I have to disagree with you on the Science Fiction theme. The Science Fiction theme is essential! How can you even consider letting it go and keeping the 'Might and Magic' name?

The MM8 character system sucked. It allowed you only to choose race, and not class (except from the humans who could be both cleric, necromancer and knight). The MM7 was great however. We sure could use the MM7 races, classes and character system again (and the choise between good and evil. It rocked!).

What about the combat system? I keep hearing about this RT/TB, but is it one and the other, or one OR the other. Cuz I really want a TB only game.

I hope 9 is really good. I want to have a good 1st impressions of the series (never played before).

Class system: I agree that the class system from MM7 is the best, and I also enjoyed to make all 4 characters from scratch, which was changed in MM8 (only 1 character), the rest you picked up premade on taverns etc.

Science Fiction: I never liked the science fiction part, but it only makes a very small part of the MM serie, and it's tolerable but not welcome IMHO. I refuse to change to these ridiculous blasters at the endgame, although they are powerfull and fast! I rely on my magic and might(y) sword
The games name is "Might & Magic" not "Science & Magic", so no need to change name if the science part should disappear.
It's not really a big issue for me, but eventhough "Maggot"'s excuse to tide Science Fiction with the title M&M is a tradition, I still won't miss it if it was just Medival Fantasy world!

Realtime/Turnbased. "Aelhyn". You change from one system to another by pushing the "Space" bar (as I recall), and you can do that anytime/anywhere in the game except when the monsters are acting in TB.
In realtime you actually fight like a 3D shooter game, with you characters acting one at a time, but always with realtime movement for the hole party (at the same time ofcourse).Actually realtime is turnbased, but with no delays for waiting on next action, so monsters will approach and attack like a realtime shooter.
In turnbased the screen freezes and the fastest characters/monsters will get the opportunity to act first. Really fast characters may act more times than a lot slower opponent. After all characters have attacked/other, you will be able to move your hole party a limited amount in any direction, before next turn is started. Monsters also move and attack according to their speed. The character to act is highlighted, and you can rotate the view 360 degree to point out the enemy/place you want to attack/cast against.
When you explore the world, you will certainly use the realtime mode, and against easy monsters, you don't want to bother going into TB mode. Meating tougher monsters will often trigger you to choose TB mode, to be able to heal your party in time, and find the best spells and weapons against the foe.
Believe me, for us who also likes the big overview in a slower paced TB combat, we can get it in M&M.

Well, the science fiction part was usually deep into the game, to fool some people into thinking they were playing a swords and sorcery game... Wizardry 7 was a wholetogether different thing (the only wizardry game I've played btw), there the science fiction elements were introduced at the start.

Anyway, what I meant was that the zany humour and the verging-on-ridiculous storyline, is as much a trademark of Might and Magic as anything else.

Yes, The story line in M&M is very mostly very imaginary, but does it always have to end up in some high-tech dungeon, with no clue in the game for a ending like that! It may have been a surprise im the beginning, but now we all know!

Hey, why don't we have a MM forum where we can sort out such quarrels without adding stuff to an already long thread of discussion?
