Are you in marvin mode? That could be the culprit.
The save game could also be corrupt.

No marvin mode. No sleep. I've been able to sit down once, and the only time I punched somebody was an accident.
Is there some trick to punching? |

Maybe you are in aggressive mode. Try pressing the tilde (~) key.

When one is in Marvin-mode one can't sleep in a bed? I've been using marvinmode and I've had the problem with being able to lie down in bed but no dialog-box popping up for me to select how long I want to sleep... |

Um..I figgered it out.
And the meat cooking: that was getting to me, but it's the same as sleeping.
A glitch occurred when I first cooked my meat: I had about 40 chunks of blood-&-gristle, fried me up a scavenger drumstick, looked at my inventory, and behold! My portable butcher shop had tripled in size! So I cooked 120 pieces of beastflesh and sold it all for a tidy profit.
