Wow at least one player posted in ttlg forums that he changed his underwear when playing the now highly praised scary level in Thief 3 . _________________

This game rules! It is going on my all-time top 10 list with Deus Ex1&2 and Morrowind.
I like the ninja-gloves better than the rope-arrow.
This game is as good as 1&2. If you hate invisible War you will likely hate this game as it has most of the same flaws.
This game does have the "lean" though.
Very dynamic, lots of differnt ways to do stuff. Tons of replay value. In otherwords a total-crack addiction. _________________ Between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities…there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars…Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand…to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet. - Robert E. I'm going to disagree with you again, kengo2019, on the DX:IW stuff - but Thief: DS is a brilliant game (so far). I don't count myself as a genuine Thief fan because even though I enjoyed the first two (and thought it was a brilliant idea), I was too impatient at the time to appreciate the gameplay as much as, say, System Shock.
So far I'm thoroughly enjoying it and I haven't noticed any of the shortcomings of DX:IW - mostly because Thief: DS is more focussed and succeeds very well at what it does. I haven't noticed any real "dumbing down", other than the climbing gloves, loot glint and arrow trails - none of which are major issues for me.
The AI is very solid and the atmosphere is outstanding. I like the graphics, although the animation is a little stilted for a major title.
DX:IW changed the art style to a more cartoony style, stripped the skill system away, ruined the inventory, obscured the view with a stupid iris thing and lacked memorable characters. Thief: DS stays very close to it's origins. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

I like what I'm hearing. Haven't had a chance to check out the demo yet, and I guess I'll have to import if I want to play the full game (not sure, haven't checked the release dates for this side of the pond). Probably not a bad thing, as I never finished Thief 2 & I'd like to do so before starting on the third. |

I should mention first that I jsut got the game yesterday and only played through the first mission. I got couple of gripes only, for now.
The first and foremost is a gripe I've been having a lot lately. Consolization of PC games. Lots of GUI things do not "flow" as they would normally on the PC. Large fonts and akward scrolling schemes. Horrible interaction with NPCs. But anyways... I feel I'm swiming against the flow on this one and the fact that the river turned into sewage doesn't help.
Second gripe is with the video performance. I can't figure out why, but my frame rate keeps dropping real bad, even though there doesn't seem to be any reason for it. I'm looking down a dark corridor, with a single guard and perhaps a single torch on the wall, and I'm getting 5 fps. That's just sick. Mind you, this 5fps persists even with the more complicated scenes, but it's quite annoying. And the worst part about it is, I can't even see where these supposedly amazing graphics are. The walls still look like cheap bitmaps that could be found in games from 6 years ago. Maybe it's just me, but I got a feeling I'm getting gypped when it comes to graphics and frame rates.
Beyond that... what others say. I'll post when I get the feeling for more gameplay. _________________ (@) |

Graphics: definitely not in same league with Doom 3, Far Cry, or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The textures and character models can be improved as some Thief fans already doing that. Overall average/above average.
Consolization: Noticed that too; the large overlay title on the menu screen, large subtitles, large healthmeter and weapons, items cycling, compass, stealth indicator, large fonts and small display area in briefing windows, etc. But all these can be altered; i change them all and definitely look much better now. Also changed the font size and total text lines displayed in briefing windows & Garrett walking/moving smoother now. The tweaks available here http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83801
Performance Tips: Using 1024*768 here. Disable Bloom. I put Light cutoff (lighting quality) and shadow to max since they didn't effect my framerates (depend on hardware combinations, your system mileage can be different). Disable AA & AF, they only caused relatively small jaggyness in game compare to others like Morrowind. The constant dark and unlit environment also help hiding the problem.
PS: Someone over Rage3D said the retail Thief version is BETA 1...because Ion Storm could not meet the deadline. I suppose that is not something new. _________________

I think we've got another 2 weeks + to wait here in the UK... wonder if it'll be an updated version?
Presumably the font size tweaks, etc, are similar to the .ini file tweaks for DX2? I'd have thought they'd set the PC version's variables a bit more sensibly after all the complaints about DX2, we're talking about a few minutes' work, literally. Oh well...
Does it support gamepad & rumble effects? I'll be playing on PC, but I'd like to try out the tactile lockpicking. |

Hi all
Lots of insight into quality of graphics etc, but how about some more specific gameplay coments? The first two Thiefs were mision based for example, but the pc mags over here have made much out of this sequels conversion to a free form system where Garret can wander at will, plunder where he likes and accept missions as and when he fancies them.
None of you have mentioned this..... should I worry?

I'm quite looking forward to this aspect (assuming it's done well!) - it's something the LG team were talking about implementing in Thief2. Obviously it never got done, but I think the Mechanists' Tower level was a hint at how they imagined it. Maybe they even had it slated for the first game too (along with the never-to-appear multiplayer!).
A review I read said that lots of city guardsmen can make the approach to mission areas a bit tiresome (presumably you have to sneak about all the time just to get from place to place) but other than that it was fine, and adds some open-endedness and freedom of decision (rather than entirely dictated goals) in the gameplay.
We'll have to hear from someone who's actually played the game , but I just thought I'd let you know that what I've heard about the structure is generally positive, Badger, so that you don't go mental. Not agorophobic are you? |

I wouldn't want to say that Thief: DS couldn't have used more time (what title can't?) but I can be fairly sure isn't Beta 1. An Ion Storm developer contacted me around two months ago to say Beta was basically finished, they had submitted Release Candidate 0 to Eidos and he expected it to go Gold within a few weeks.
On the freeform town stuff, I haven't had enough play time to form a real opinion (you only do this between missions). I would say so far that despite seeming a very good idea, it lacks one of the major components of Thief gameplay - atmosphere. The missions are well-designed, drip with atmosphere, overheard conversations and notes that all funnel into the story. The town stuff just isn't as exciting. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |
