Unexpected entry to the old mine

First time I approached the old mine today, it was deserted, and the gate was down. No entry then.

But having been hacking away at some ore outside the mine I saw a bit just inside the gate, so I figured I'd start hacking into that too, to see what happens.

Suddenly I'm on the other side of the closed gate to the mine!! "Whoohoo, I'm in!" thought I.

Shortly afterwards I thought I was still playing Red Faction and did the wrong thing with a ladder, falling to my death far below.

But on reloading from a save I'd made just prior to my first approach to the mine THIS TIME I find some of the Templars outside AND the gate is now open... Wierd. Oh well, never mind, this 2nd approach was more interesting and felt right, rather than the 'cheat' above.

This is one of the most common bugs. It was a good idea to reload.
