Good question!!

I won't awnser it because I think I would be kind of insulting the other Gothic-game. The Gothic-games are the best RPG's ever made as far as I'm concerned and I'm not gonne choose between them.

Yes, the story was very good (and original) in Gothic 1, but I like Gothic 2 more, why?

I like the new medieaval city theme. I was really missing that in Gothic 1. In fact, the whole world seems more real now and I really like that. Finally there are farmers and nobles. In Gothic 1, all NPCs were nothing but just poor suckers and cuttroaths.
The world is much more detailed, and much more beatiful too. The world in Gothic 1 was very empty and lush.
Even tough you had 3 sides to join and you could still combine a mage or a fighter no matter what side you are on, this doesn't seem to make any change in the storyline. You always get banned from the Old camp. And there are no special guild-only quests like in Gothic 2. There weren't many either, yes, but there were some. And it made a difference, a huge diference in fact, what side were you playing (paladin, merc, mage). Dragon Hunters can forge their own unique ore swords, Mages create their runes and Paladins have their own way of playing too. And there are many other things too...
Also, many things have been improved, like better inventory and trading.

These are the reasons I like Gothic 2 (much) more, altough Gothic 1 was a great game with a great story, but IMHO, Gothic 2 was much better for me.

But still, both games are a must-play for all Gothic fans. I personaly started with Gothic 2 and played Gothic 1 AFTER that. Maybe that's why I also like G2 more. It's very different if you play the sequel first and the original later..

I liked both game a lot, best games I ever played, but I prefered G1 a bit more becaus of the more open storyline and the many plot changes

I liked G2 better, i think It's atmosphere was special and there were way more side quests, though i liked both games a lot i think the storyline of gothic 2 was better, there were more options to choose (there are a lot of different quests with every guild) and the game was longer and harder *G*...

I can't wait to play the eddon and Gothic 3!

Gothic 1 wasn't longer, and certanly not harder. you could build everything to maximum very soon. G1 can be harder from the begining, but not for long, as soon as you join one of the guilds you will level up fast...

I think G2 is a little harder here, specialy since the addon came out, it's much harder now. and more fun, of course.

dude you cant ask a qustion like this ..
its like being in love whit two chicks and they like find out and force you to choose between them .. totaly blows man

anyway i would like it if G2 didnt have such a lineare beginning
in G1 you where booted in to a whole new place and didnt know what was going on or where in the hell you where or where to go

in G2 your slaped on a mission before your even allowed to check your inventory and your told where to go and everything all missing is that your given a map and a compass

but other then that its unfair to make people choose like this

Hm.. Well it's different. I played G2 first and G1 after so the game was a completely different experience to me. I cannot imagine how it was to play G1 for the first time. Huh.

I agree with you, although I have to say that it's a very difficult choice. I simply like all of them. I've chosen Gothic 2, just because they would be a bit similar of points.

Better graphics: yes. Better voices: there's been a long discussion about that
